is this true?

Anybody paying $5/gal yet ?

 So a very good friend of mind just had his 02 powerstroke... ... ... well... ... have a stroke. he was pulling out of a parking lot at work, not hotrodding or bing dumb, just pulling out. and it threw a rod... ... no warning sounds at all... ... . only 110k on it. just gota chip, like 3 days ago and has not even used it! so he is going to drop in a 12v cummins and a six speed. good for him. i think he will have better luck... ... .

this is true. it is a 7. 3. he is tearing it apart now, he thinks it s factory rod issue, fracture in the rod etc...

That must be a 7. 3? The 7. 3 isn't a bad engine (especially compared with the 6. 0 disaster).

I have a 2001 Ford cube(company) just about to hit 250,000 miles/approx 4000+ idle hours, all stock with original injectors/turbo/glowplugs---engine has never been opened up and still is running great, but it is getting tired/underpowered(195HP stock),doesn't like the cold weather, this is our 10th 7. 3 and best of the bunch---average mileage loaded/unloaded is 10/12 MPG. This one has been kept the longest and least amount of problems, has never been driven easy, but also not abused---only driven by me. There is a reason why i have a Cummins in my garage after logging 450,000 miles on two 7. 3 trucks. Sure glad we skipped the 6. 0 disasters, now we have gone back to Chevy gas---my new one just arrived, but we will dump these ones every 180,000 miles.

Tell your friend to buy a used Dodge with a Cummins. I believe that would be a better choice and maybe cheaper.

It might be cheaper, but I'm not too sure about better. Ford does make a good truck, just wrong motor choices. If I had the money, I would buy an '01or newer crew cab Super Duty and put a Cummins in it.

With all due respect, I can not agree with you. I've had two Fords and I'll never have another. You don't see a Dodge in the shop as much as you see Furds.

Fair enough, but 99% of the time it's because of motor problems. I too have had Ford trucks, but I never had any problems outside the engine compartment.

With engine problem being the worst part of Ford, I also had major electrical, fuel system, body hardware and rust problems. Can you imagine, I bought the trucks new in New Mexico and after a few years I had rust problems. In New Mexico where we are dry. I can see that happening in Wisconsin were it's much wetter, but not in NM. Most of the fords around here have rust problems, but you never see a Dodge rusting out, unless it came from a wetter area. Other problems with ford were bad paint. I could go on and on about the lousy fords, but why?

Sorry to hear about the problems you've had, maybe I just got lucky!? In all honesty, I've had more problems with the Dodges I've owned than the Fords I've owned. I'm not brand loyal to Dodge, it's the Cummins that sold me.

I've owned 5 dodge trucks from half tons to three quarter tons and driven them hard and worked them even harder all got well over 100,000 miles on them and had very little problems. All the companies that I have worked for either had ford's or chevy's and they were extremely inferior to all the dodge's that I've owned.

Unfortunately, a '02 Ford with a blown engine isn't worth much on the used market, so that reduces reasonable alternatives, such as selling or trading for something different - so the option of an engine swap to the Cummins DOES make decent $$$ sense in this case...

And since Ford DID use the Cummins in their 550 and 650 level trucks, the adapting might not be too bad...

I'm Glad I have two Cummins!:D:D

I drove a Farmer/Friend 6. 9 many years ago it had plenty of power but he had problems with the plastic parts on the injection system.

Cummins all the way!! I was getting some fuel the other day and as I was filling up I was chatting with a Ford guy. We were talking about power and the overall efficiency of out trucks. Lets just say Dodge and Cummins beats out a Ford with a Powerstroke any day. This guy had a 2000 w/ 80,000 miles on it and was getting 12-14 mpg empty. :{ I told him I get 18-20 mpg empty and he almost ***** his pants. You should have seen the look on his face. :--) It was priceless. My buddy at work is a huge Ford guy and I rag on him everyday. I LOVE IT!!

For every story there is about Furd and the poor Powerjoke engine, the Furd guys have their own stories about Dodge. The one I hear a lot is the Furd guys say, it's too bad Dodge puts a 1/2 million mile engine on a 80K mile truck.

Diesel tech had an article about connecting rods not too long ago(it might even be the current issue or the last one) The later 7. 3 (2000 and up or abouts) had powdered metal rods while the earlier ones had forged rods. The article claimed that the powdered metal rods were only good for about 400 rwh.
