I understand your logic there, but what they did was put on a block heater and a generator that would power it anyplace, factory standard.

My collection of older Cummins books however indicate that in 1988 the famous Dodge heater grids had not yet been designed. It is my recollection that the 5. 9 Cummins did not use them prior to Dodge trucks. How about it old timers, what is the earliest heater grid Cummins 5. 9 you know of?

I think since prior to the Dodge Cummins in '88 they prolly just used either to start them in Ag, Const, and OTR applications...

DavidBurt, I'd be willing to be you have a few glow plugs that are shot on the 7. 3l ford... They aren't bad to test/change if the tips haven't swollen... That or your harness or relay is bad...

Another factor to consider when cold starting is the timing. The raft company I worked for has a small '96 Freightshaker buss with a B series in it. It has no grid heater and is very hard to start even when above freezing. The timing on this buss is 14. 5. My truck does much better then that with even more miles and 16 deg. timing so I don't know what's up with that buss. One time I took the intake off and held a little hand torch down there to get it started. Lucky for them it only runs in the summer. Coldest I have started was -10 and I ran the heaters 2 or 3 times, not sure now.

Rattlin Ram I'm pretty good at checking them every oil change, the truck is just a pile or it could be something in the harness. I always get it started though. The Cummins in our volvo 10 wheeler at work doesnt have anything but it always starts. Maybe that Cummins just adds extra fuel when its cold, like the push button on the injection pump of older farm tractors.
