Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Glow plugs.......

What the deal with the glow plugs in the CTD? I'm told they are built in to the fuel injectors! Is that true? Does that mean if I ever need to replace them I have to buy all 6 new injectors? They are woring fine now, but was considering relacing them as part oif a "tune up" (I have a 96 Ram 2500 CTD with 150K on it... . )

No their not part of the injectors. Atleast the weren't in my injectors when i tore em apart and tested them.

as far as i have found the 12v CTD does not have a glow plug as you and I know it... ... instead it uses an intake heater. there is a wire grid right where the air enters the manafold. there is info post on when they turn on and off at differant temps.

Someone is yanking your leg, the CTD does not use glow plugs.

Intake air and the fuel are both preheated prior to injection as needed to permit combustion.

This is a simple explanation, I am sure there are some folks on this forum that can provide you with a much better and more detailed description of exactly how it works.

The preheat system on your Cummins is much more reliable and trouble free than the glow plug type used on other engines. Learn the basics by clicking here -

Like it has been said,, no Glow plugs. But here is the good part. High performance Injectors are about $50 - $75 each, and you can replace them yourself avoiding any labour charges.

Thanks for the info everyone, very helpful (as usual!). . You guys are going to die when I tell you who told me the glow plugs were part of injectos, my local Dodge dealer! Can you beleive it! Thank God for this site!Oo.

Got to watch out for some dealers. I had one swear up and down while my truck was under warranty that a fuel problem was being caused by a bad electric pump in the fuel tank. They went as far as draining and dropping the tank before figuring out that diesels don't have pumps in the tank.

Another good reason to NOT have a warranty.



And to search high and low to find a DC store with good DIESEL techs.



My local DC outlet is also the FoMoCo store, they will NEVER see my truck. Except when I lug it driving by the service entrance. They deserve it, I tried to convince them that ford doesn't ownd Cummins, but they wouldn't buy that--they KNOW better!
