One HUGE Clevis

Jewelry on the job

I've got a 2002 impala with the 3800 engine. Since about warranty time, I've had a slow leak in the coolant system that I haven't been able to find externally.

I've been told that there's a common problem with some sort of plastic intake piece, I'm looking for a direction on this as I don't want to take it in to the dealer to have them rip apart my engine at $80 an hour to find a leak. But I might have to do that anyways.....

If anyone works on these and could point me in a direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Dave

Our 99 grand prix had that problem, but after I gave it to my bro-in-law. I believe he said in the intake there are coolant lines running through to cool the incoming air, and that tube is very thin. It hydro-locked the engine, so be careful!

I would suggest for you to get a service manual and look at the intake pictures, it should point out where the lines run clearly and how you get to them. Or you could just start poking around the intake until you find it.

I would suggest sending in your oil for analysis. That way you will know if the coolant is getting burned (head gasket?) or leaking into the oil or both depending on how much coolant is in the oil vs. the amount of coolant disappearing from the radiator.

The wifes 96 5. 7L burb is in the shop right now for a leaky intake gasket. If you have coolant in the oil you better get it fixed quick-it eats bearings in a hurry
