Cummins bore and stroke

well ive found a few gm 6. 5s and just wondering some info bout them first of all what years are the most reliable second what is alot of miles on one of these trucks also are they bombable or no what are the weak parts on these trucks and last yey or nay on the gm 6. 5

hello bogo, since no one has answered you,i will. first off,the best place for some no bs info on the 6. 2 or 6. 5 engines,is the gm diesel page, its a great site and the people over there are less likely to scold you for the mere mention of a different brand, some sites i cant say the same for. anyway,i have had great results from the 6. 2 and 6. 5 engines, the 6. 5 was derived from the 6. 2,however other than being lower on power,i feel the 6. 2 is the better engine. the 6. 5 came out in 92,92 and 93 were not computerized and had a better track record. 94 and up had computerized injector pumps on them, the pumps were good units, but the computer stuff on them did not handle the heat from the engine very well. problems such as hard starting,no starting, stalling and overfueling were possible. the engines were easy to work on and cheaper also. i have seen many go 300k with few,if any problems, and a couple with 400k+ on them. i personaly have 180k on my 93 model 1 ton and 120k on another 96 model one ton. the 93 has been trouble free, the 96 has had a injector pump put on it. i also have a 82 3/4 ton with the 6. 2 and a turbo, the trk made 360k before its first rebuild. the engines respond well to minor mods, but sucessful heavy bombing will require engine upgrades. 350hp is possible with these engines. i have worked my trucks on a daily basis, and they have done me well, however if you are into serious heavy towing on a regular basis,a ford or dodge diesel will serve you better...

well i would be towing some race cars wheeler sleds tractors and maybe a bobcat once and a while i have heard really mixed results on these gm diesel thanks for responding to my topic and thanks for the information anyone else want to add to that or share there opinion

I prefer the pre-'94 6. 5's over the 6. 2.

My biggest gripe with the Chevy/GMC's, is the IFS front end and the TLA that actuates the front axle, if you were to get a 4x4.

I've owned or driven many different diesel pickup trucks. The Ram is my favorite one. Cummins is alot of it. :D Starts cold MUCH easier than the older V8 diesels. Can't say on the PSD or D-Max.

The 6. 9/7. 3IDI are fine. Just not powerhouses.

The early 6. 5's with the block casting #599 had a really high # of headgasket failures. The 94 and newer had tons of injection pump problems. [mostly 94/95] The piston coolers did not go in till 97 [from memory]

I owned a few of these and wrenched on them also. My advise is to stay well clear of these money pits. If $ are short pick up a good workhorse. [1 'st gen] with a 12 valve. A 93 with intercooler and stick would be a good choice.

I've replaced many a pump in the 94 and newer trucks, and they run pretty good afterwards (they do alil tweaking). Their pretty good for just running around empty and such but they are pretty weak when towing from what I have seen.
