Has GM changed to cast iron heads on the Dmax?

Over on the DMAX side they are stating that GM contends that oil consumption of "1 quart per 100 gallons of fuel is within spec and gm will not attempt repair on anything with in that. " I don't know about you - but at say even 15 MPG - that's a qt every 1500 Miles! That would &^$% me off!

Heard that line before...

We have had a 1970 something model Case tractor (100HP) that we bought used in the late '80s. When we bought it, the dealer told us that a quart per day was acceptable. Had a complete engine rebuild probably sometime in the '90s and it does not use a drop to this day. Work consists of anything from no load to full load with black smoke rolling for the day... just depends on what that day's work is.

We have a 6400 JD with over 5000 hours on it and it is yet to use a drop of oil.

Just the luck of the draw and whether or not the DM is built and designed to allow for that. If it is, then that says something... I DON'T WANT ONE!:p In this day and time, it is too easy to build a diesel engine that does not consume any. It is now the norm. Oo.

With the talk about Detroit Diesel engines I understand that is going to be the diesel in the late 04 jeeps. Something to think about before buying if things haven't changed on their end.

Before my dodges I had fords. The first 1 was 1983 6. 9l 198,000 miles and no makeup oil between changes. Then I had a 1989 7. 3l. It used a quart every 1500 miles from the day I bought it. So far my 2 dodges don't use any oil between changes. Even my sons 1991 12v with 130,000 miles doesn't use any between changes.

oil consumption seems to be quite common in all gm engines. I know of several people that i work with that have

gm trucks (new) that use excessive amounts. Two have the 6. 0 and have both been back to the dealer numerous

times and one has the big block that has been re-ringed once and now they are going to replace the engine. I guess the duramax is just following suit.

My fiends duramax was in the shop for about 6 weeks over that problem. He had a loss of power and oil consumption. At first they said it was the oil separator and it was on backorder. They put it on when it came in and he picked it up, drove it 50-60 miles and pulled the dipstick. It took over a gallon to fill it. Sent it back and then they told him it needed injectors, and they were on backorder. They got them in and installed and he drove it home again 50-60 miles and over a gallon to top off the motor oil. I asked him why he was driving so far to buy his trucks and get them worked on, he said the local dealers have poor customer service. I then told him again that my truck makes alot more power uses no oil with almost 150,000 on it and cost half what his did. He no longer wants to brag on how tough his truck is either. He moved it a few weeks ago.

Detroit Diesel hasn't put a 71 Series 2 stroke diesel on the road since the 80's, since the Federal Govmt. banned them for being too dirty.

Don't worry, these are NOT what Jeep is going to be running. Interesting, though, is why Jeep won't be using MB diesels...

My 115K+ 450+RWHP Cummins only uses a quart every 1,000-2,000 miles,, depending on how Hot EGT gets, and how long it stays there.

My Dad's D-Max Allison Doesn't use ANY Oil betweeen his 7,500 mile oil changes.

My Dad's Detroit, 6-71,,, hehe, Oil Slinger,, the motor spits it out the exhuast, and leaks at every "Seal" of course,, changing the oil more often then once every 2-3 years might help it hold it's oil better... . but the motor's been runnin' strong for the 13 years WE have had it,, who knows how long it ran before we got it,,,,

during our recent Baja trip, my buddy's brand new 6. 0 gas chevy burned about a quart every 2 fill-ups. Mine was full when I left and 2,500 miles later when I got back, it was still full. dealer told him it was normal. His truck has about 15,000 km on it.

I operate a Vermeer rock saw and it has a 453 detroit in it. She screams out at 3200 rpm and uses a gallon of 15w/40 an hour.

My 2000 ctd only used 1 Qt. of oil one time between oil changes. I never could figure out why that happened?? There was no difference in the way I drove it? Other than that one time I have never had to add oil between changes to any CTD I have owned. Normal change interval is 5000 miles. After putting over 125,000 miles on my wifes Toyota Landcruiser it is now needing almost 1 Qt of oil every 6000 miles. It does not leak any, but I can live with it burning close to 1 Qt. every 6000 miles. ;)

I'm surprised that 1 qt every other fill up will pass emission test!

I would assume that using a qt every other fillup or about 700-800 miles - would not be a clean burning engine! What do you think??????

We tow at 21,180 lbs GCW (21,500 GCWR) and have never added any oil between changes (3000 to 4000 miles). This even includes the break-in period.

Not to sound like the Ford boys saying "Ford owns Cummins" (they don't) but did you know Dodge owns Detroit diesel, actually Daimler Chrysler owns it. If you don't believe me check out their site.
