Would a stock air box be quieter then a BHAF, and are all 2nd gen stock boxes the same? So if I found one from a '02 it would work for my '98? Thanks

I think the 12 valves were closer to the fire wall and the 24 closer to the radiator but im not sure the stock boxes are quiter or so Im told my shell shocked ears can't tell the difference

All air boxes from '94 to '02 are exactly the same. Putting a stocker on should help cut turbo noise a little. Do you have a turbo you can install a silencer ring on?

When I had the BHAF on my '98 it was hard to hear the stock turbo, quite quiet.

I had a BHAF on my '99 which drove me nuts until I installed the Tag I. That seemed kind of contradictory,so I reverted to a stocker w/AFE PG7. Nice compromise.

Well I've been doing some research on reusable drop in air filters for the stock box:confused: I've been leaning towards the K&N but don't understand the pricing? I've seen anything from $9. 99 all the way to $105 What's the deal???

I just changed over from the stock air box to a BHAF & Outerware prefilter on my 2002 and the turbo noise was not really any more noticable than with the stock air box. The increase in air flow and drop in turbo lag was HUGE.

I have tried the aFe Pro Dry S OEM drop in filter and they are junk. With the stock OEM Fleet Guard paper filter, I could pull about 32 to 35 lbs. of boost depending upon temp and weather conditions. With the aFe filter my boost pressure dropped 6 to 8 psi across the range. Save your money.

The heat shield and BHAF with Outerware prefilter is the best set up in my opinion.

See my post on the BHAF heat shield.

YUP - my experience as well, the Amsoil/Donaldson I'm currently running seems to do well too, but it seems obvious that a larger free-flowing air filter is 99% of the engine "breathing battle" solution, and anything additional is pretty much just unnecessary and expensive ginger bread... ;):D

Chief USA Thanks. I was primarily thinking the stock air box might quiet things down a bit, but if it's hardly noticeable I would rather not loose any extra air intake or possible performance gains from my BHAF. I like that heat shield too, think I might get one for myself;)

More on turbo whistle.

I've got severe hearing loss and had to install a Tag I inline to get rid of the whistle of the BHAF I had. My wife nagged me to death too as she sat in the passenger side of the truck. I think I'm especially sensitive to turbo whistle as I couldn't even handle the minimal whistle the Cool Black Hose lets through on the 3rds. One man's whistle is another's lullabye I guess. One thing's certain though, the BHAF flows great and cleans the air well at minimal cost.
