Has anybody had this issue?

The mode switch is all wacky. Sometimes heat comes out the defrost when the floor is on and vice-versa.

I get the feeling it's a bad mode switch because of how it gets out of sync.

I don't think any of my warranty will cover it. I was reading some of the repair manual and it seems it's all able to be diagnosed with obd2.

Hope they don't rape me

I have this problem, too. Mine will blow out the front vents but has problem switching to the windshield vents. Keep us posted on what happens at the shop.

Your heaters deforst door is busted. It's a super common problem, especially on earlier trucks and there's a TSB to take care of it.

Scotty

You guys are great. I found the TSB it's 24-004-03

Big job to fix it. You have to evacuate the A/C to get to it. The give 3. 2 Hrs.

Has anybody found a way to fix it ourselves? Possibly without breaking into the A/C system?

Mike

You can fix the the inside/outside blend door pretty easily without taking everything apart (I've done it) but the defrost door is another story.

It would be worth 3 hours of labor to have it done IMO.

B/O A/C, defrost etc.

I had the problem until this past fall when the A/C also started

freezing up due to a leak in the condenser. Daimler Chrysler paid

for the repairs, a total of $1300. They charge anywhere from $750 to

$1000 to get behind the dash to repair the doors that direct the

air flow. Now everything on my controls works, I now longer have

to switch the engine off and reset the dials.

My truck is an '03 and had gone much past the warranty on mileage

and months, all I had to pay was $100 on a $1300 job.

You need to call the number that is located in your operator manual

after you have talked to your DC dealer about your problem. Be

prepared to hang on the phone for as much as 30 minutes at a time

and they will likely take care of most of your charges if not all of them.

BE NICE BUT FIRM when you talk to them. Your dealer might call them

for you.

Wow great tip. I'm only 10,000 miles out of miles warranty but still the 36 months. I also have the 7/70 which I believe is only for the power train.

I did read it was a $700 job. Sucks cause this thing is definately a factory defect waiting to happen.

I'll take you advice and call.

There is a thread called " HVAC Removal with pictures" . It was last posted 10-23-06 and It has very good pictures of a member "scbroder" who took very good pictures as he removed his dash and also gave instruction. He then removed his hvac box and replaced all doors in the hvac with pictures and part ##s. If someone can bring this thread back it would help. I keep trying to reopen the thread but I must be doing something wrong. He has the pictures in his picture gallery.

Pleasantly Surprised!

D/C has just shown me they can hang with the best. I was concerned they would be difficult with warranty claims let alone out of warranty claims. I'm at 46,900 miles but not three years yet.

My truck was in today for the defrost door issue. I called D/C 800 number. They told me to get it diagnosed first. . everything I'm saying here happened today. .

They tore the truck apart and called me confirming the issue... I called D/C back . . very easy to reconnect using the REF#. They asked me what I thought they should do since I was 10,000 miles out of warranty. I simply explained it was a manuf defect that was going to cost me $700 out of pocket and they should pay for it.

They reviewed it. . the guy was a stinker... he says "You want the bad news or the good news first?" I said "whatever".

Bad news..... I pay for the repair

Good news... After the repair I submit it for reimbursement less $100

Not bad for an out of warranty claim.

I asked them to also replace the fourth part recommended by the article which they complied with (I'm paying for that).

Be done tommorrow.

Thanks again ssanders60 for leading me on. Saved me a bundle.

Sounds fair enough that you (or anyone else) would consider a DC product next time around. That's what they need to do to KEEP the customers they have and attract new ones.

General Motors was not so good to me.

Short story: Plastic (yes PLASTIC) intake manifold failed and hydrolocked the engine. Very well known problem that GM would not cover, so there's an '07 Honda in the garage now. Beleive me, I'd much rather be spreading the word that GM takes care of its customers, rather than hoping they just go away. :( (my brother works for GM... Haven't broken the news about the Honda yet  )

A/C probs at DC

Bighammer, there is always arbitration. For anyone who is interested

in justice when you have been ripped off by the Manufacturer or

dealer, always look in your operator manual and see how to proceed

with arbitration. I have never lost an appeal, all were against GM.

The most amusing was the last time when I won the repair cost on

an injector pump on a vehicle that had 105,000 miles on it. The pump

had been replaced twice already by GM and they had refused to do it

a 3rd time. Recently on my '01 Buick they replaced two power windows

under threat of arbitration. The dealer helped me in this. This is not

a long drawn out process. Also last year on my daughter's '01 grand

Cherokee they replaced the heater box a second time with the understanding

that I would process a BBB claim against them. I gave them the choice.

These arbitrators are usually retired people who volunteer to do this

for no compensation. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS KEEP COPIES OF THE

REPAIR BILLS. gUYS, THE MORE YOU ARBITRATE THE EASIER IT IS FOR

EVERYONE TO WIN THEIR CLAIMS.

Just received a check today from Chrysler for $635. 26 which was $100 short of the total cost of the repair.

Not bad for out of warranty work!
