Going to Alaska!!!

Hey everyone, this is my first trip to Alaska and I love to fish. I will be driving up though N. Nevada and in through Glacier National Park... . from there, I would like some advise on which way to go! I love flyfishing smaller rivers and streams away from the "tourists". Any info you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated! I will be leaving on June 25. My destination in Alaska is Valdez. How about where to go in Alaska also! Any info would be great! Thanks

Come on up the weather is great. The picture bellow is a nice 15-20 lb king salmon that I caught about 2 hours ago in the Ninilchik river on my 9 wt fly rod using salmon roe as bait.....

When you type a message there is a box down at the bottom that if for attaching files. I simply pushed the browse button next to it and picked the file off my computer. The file can only be so large 1024 bites and the image size is limited to 400x400. But at least we can attach pics with out loading them to some other server now. I assume that the size restrictions are set to limit the amount of server space used. Hope it helps.



By the way. . here is tonights fish... . same size and same hole on the river. Only took 5 casts to catch this one... ... ...

Take the Cassiar Hwy. not the Alaska Hwy.

The road might not be as nice but you will see fewer people and more wildlife(lots of black bears).

Didn't you know the fishing is still closed on the Ninilchik? Yeah... . Fish and Game delayed the opening because the kings didn't meet thier escapement goals. You better get rid of the evidence fast!!!! The best way to do that is toss it on the grill for a few minutes to alter it's appearance, then flush it down with a beer.





Seriously, I suggest to anyone traveling to Alaska to purhcase a guide called the Mile Post. It's a must have for travelers. It contains a wealth of information and lists things such as fuel stops, campgrounds, motels, auto services, where to look for wildlife ect... .



The Cassiar Hwy can be rough if you are not used to traveling on rough roads. It is more remote, and some say scenic , but can be a little rougher at times. The Alaska Hwy from Dawson Creek BC to Delta AK gets better every year, but also experiences seasonal construction. I would highly recommend going up that route initially, then if you don't find it too intimidating, return on the Cassiar.

JR2, those are nice,bright fish. What did you do, catch them as they came in out of the salt water?



I stayed at "Eagles Nest" a couple of years ago up above Homer. Had lots of fun with the halibut but the Salmon were pretty slow. Last year I caught a 174# Halibut and a nice 40# ling. Those are the pictures I was trying to post. Fished with Alaska Wilderness Outfitters out of Cordova and had a great 9 day remote trip. I'll keep trying to post the pics.

Hey David- When you go through Glacier go around the east side and take the drive up to Upper Two Medicine Lake, you won't be disapointed. See Trick Falls on the way up. My wife and I just got back last month after driving over 20,000 miles last winter touring the lower 48. We were on the road for 7 months. When you come up if you come into Anchorage look me up. Milepost book yes!

You lucky fellow! I echo the comments on picking up the Milepost. It is filled with good info. Also the fishing on the way up along the Cassier is great. (Well 15 years ago it was) I have heard that the road has been paved but am not sure. I used to live in Anchorage and our saying was that Alaska was only 30 minutes away. Which really means that the well beaten paths along suitable creeks only extend a ways off the road. So hike further and the fishing probaly will be better! Keep a clean camp and the wildlife should not be much of a problem.
