I think I am going to sell my 01 dodge and go to a 06 or 07 mega cab. I need more room! Right now my truck has the goerend stage 3 trans (love it) I think I would like to go to the 6 speed man. I don't want to go thru the auto thing again. What do people think about the newer auto. I pull a skid loader every now and then but mainly lighter stuf. I just like the feel you get with the man trans. All of the power going down the wheels. Also I am looking forward to getting away from the older front ends (wander on the roads). does the 3rd gen have the high psi fuel pump/lift pump problems?Any input would be great.

'06 and '07 have the lift pump in the tank. The CP3 pumps seem to be fairly reliable and are less expensive than VP44. The six speed in the newer trucks is the G56. It has a dual mass flywheel. Clutch cannot hold as much power as the older NV5600 clutch. If you get a newer truck with the g56 I would recommend a Smarty JR for a little more power. On tow the JR is safe for the stock clutch.

I don't know much about auto's except that towing and high power applications guys tend to upgrade like you did on your '01. Hope you can find what you want.

I have an 08 6. 7L with the 68RFE Auto Trans. This trans is a world of difference then the older Auto on the 5. 9L. I pull a 5er during the camping season and with the e-brake that is standard and the tow-haul mode I have never had a issue. This trans has been used by many who use the truck in long distance towing with no issues. I believe some haveover 200K on the trans now.

My advice would to be to buy an 08 with the 6. 7L engine and the 68RFE Auto. Dodge had work most of the issue out of the emission equipment and most are trouble free.

Thanks for the input! The 6. 7 just kinda scares me a little with the emission crap on there. I like to tinker/change/upgrade stuff and having all that crap on the engine just adds an unknown for myself. I do like the new 68rfe 6speed auto. From what I have read the 6. 7 is not getting the mpg as the 5. 9 did. I don't like that.

What does the duel mass flywheel do for you. Can this be change back to a regular aftermarket hd clutch? thanks

roller1000,

What area of the country do you live in?

Some of us are using the Smarty S67 for improve fuel mileage. I have achieved a solid 3 MPG improvement even with winter fuel. I have been trouble free for the last 7K miles since my install of the Smarty.

I have read were other users have replaced their dual mass flywheel to a heavier flywheel. I believe you can contact South Bend Clutch or ATS Diesel Performance for help.

I would do a search for dual mass flywheel on this site and see what is out there.

roller, I did what you want to do and have NEVER looked back. I didn't get a mega cab, just a quad '07, 5. 9, G56. Yeah... It would be great if we 5. 9ers could get the 68RFE adapted to our trucks but it doesn't seem to be available to do right now.
The Dual Mass flywheel was used to primarily to quiet the noise that you get with an aluminum case transmission. I pulled my DMF out at 20k and went with a Southbend CON-OFE and a solid flywheel. The CON-OFE has an organic friction surface on one side and a metalic on the other. It is grabby. I want to drive someones with the Southbend 3250 Dual Disc to see if it is any smoother.
The 3rd gen truck, in my opinion, is a much quieter cab, has alot more room and more visability.
See my signature for the mods I did on mine. Most were for mileage. I am getting the same fuel mileage as I did with my '01. 5 auto, 2wd.
