Well, I'm preparing for a huge move... to New Zealand. WIll be moving and getting married around May of next year. Wow, is there a lot of loose ends to wrap up for a inter-country move. Any tips or advise from those in the know?

Unfortunately, I cannot bring my truck with me, so I will be parting with that as soon as possible. I will be bringing my motorcycle, as the riding in NZ is spectacular. I will have to price out an inverter or whatever to see if it is feasible to keep my power tools.

And yes, the water does swirl the other way in the throne! That was the first thing I checked out at the airport!

Before you go to move anything be sure to check import duty's. You might find it to expensive to bring much with you.

:-laf ... that's the 1st thing I tried when I went to Sydney. Stoppered up the sink, 1/2 full, pulled the plug ... IT WORKS!!! :-laf

I understand that the NZ govt only allows a certain amount of personal $ to leave the country @ a time. So, after living there awhile & you amass your fortune & then want to leave :{

I'm sure there is a way, like leaving an account open over here in the states & transferring $ little by little. Heads up type scoop. :)

Good luck down there, beautiful country ... active volcano stuff happening too!

I will be moving to Rotorua. It is the middle of the north island. Lot's of thermal activity, as it sits in the crater of a volcano.

WOW, I stay away for awhile to find out half of you is left, NOW your getting married AND moving! :)

Jeff, my wishes to you and yours. Hope you will enjoy it.

Good luck - since I've travelled pretty much all over the world people that know me have always asked what is the best place I've visited. My reply is always that NZ is the only country I would leave the US for. I love the people (although the natives can get restless) and the diversity of the terrain - mild climate to the north, hot springs in the middle, Wellington perched above the sea in the south, and then a dose of Norwegian fiords and Swiss Alps on the South Island.

Moved to India for 1. 5 yrs back in 2001. Don't know your situation regarding work and any plans to return to the US, but there are some lucrative tax breaks if you are out of the country for over a year.

Things to worry about are banking, insurance, mail delivery, bill paying (if you have any left in the US), taxes, storage of goods, and transportation back/forth.

I was planning to come back so put everything in storage (including my CTD and the wife's mercedes) and made sure my ins company knew what was going on. Had all bills setup to pay over the internet. Mail was forwarded/address changed to my son, who would forward any important stuff over once every other month. Filed my taxes by printing the forms and sending them in by mail - the refund check was direct deposited along with my paychecks.

None of this may apply to your situation.

Thanks for the info. I will probably be over there for a minimum of five years. We may move to the US at some point, but maybe not, so that is why I will be selling my truck, and a bunch of other stuff. Bills and all of that will be wrapped up on this end.

My fiance is born and raised in NZ, on the North Island. She just returned after having spent three weeks over here. She really liked the States, and it was huge surprise to her. The US isn't portrayed in a kind light by the media... surprise surprise!

Four million people and 38 million sheep, and 31 million cattle... i like the numbers!
