funny thread from ford site

I am in need of a good CB for around $100 to $150. My $40 Maxxon isn't cuttin' it anymore. I need good speaker quality and good range. I can't even pickup someone two car lengths behind me anymore. What do you guys recommend?

The Cobra 75 WXST would work. It can be mounted under the seat, has the controls in the mic, has a weather band, and a remote speaker can be added (I put mine up on the visor) to make it easy to hear... :D

I ran a lot of Cobras and Unidens over the last 25 years, then the last 4 or 5 I bought were poor performers. Switched to Galaxy and what a difference! Be sure and look at them.

Have

I have a little Uniden mounted in the cubby hole below the roof lights. It mounted right in with no major problems. You might want to check the SWRs on your old radio antenae before you throw the radio away though... A lot of times you will just have a bad ground, a loose conection, or ant short... ... .

I have a 29LTD Cobra, I like it. Had the Cobra 75 WX ST, (still have it in box) The WX ST was about useless for me, when you turn the squelch up enough to cut out the noise you couldn't pick up any thing. Will let the WX ST go for about fifty if anyone is interested, also have extra unit so it can be moved from one vehicle to another by just unscrewing the microphone connection. Yes and I still don't like it. bg

I'd stay away from Cobra. They used to make a quality radio, but not anymore. What B. G. said above about his 29LTD was true with mine as well. It also would mysteriously power down very offten and would only come back on when it was good and ready. When it was on, it had a high pitched sqeal that could be heard both by me and whoever I was talking to (during the rare moments that it actually worked). My Cobra 29+ went through THREE expensive LED front panels. All the LEDs would cease to work making the radio pretty much unusable.

A two-way radio dealer I knew said the no-frills Uniden 510XL was one of the best radios ever produced for the money (about $39). My wife has one and its true. Its got excellent range and audio quality.

I need one with a really good speaker that is real clear when it is turned all the way up. With stacks in the truck and doing 80mph, it has to be all the way up. What is a good price on a good Galaxy?

I've had several RadioShack's now, and they have always treated me well. No problems. Just be sure, no matter what you get, that you get a decent antenna. I think they call the longer ones a 1/4 wavelength. Probably worth it. There's also the dual ones that are somehow tuned to eachother, but I have no experience with those ???
