Fullerton Dodge in Somerset NJ.

I am very nervous whenever someone works on my vehicles, so naturally I was on edge when I dropped the truck off for warranty work. A friend had bought his Ram there and had been in for work and found out that there's a good Cummins tech there, so I figured I would try them since my selling dealer is over an hour away in northern NJ.

I called for an appointment and informed them that I did not purchase from them. The writer said it was not a problem.

When I showed up I gave them my list and noted that I wanted all items addressed, even if it meant leaving the truck there a few days though I set today as a deadline, which gave them 5 days. All work was done as requested and the truck was ready when promised. They even gave me an inspection sheet noting items like brake pad thickness, tire tread thickness, fluid levels, etc. They topped off my washer fluid and added some coolant too. I was pleased when I picked it up.

The work I had done;

Replaced the CP3 (it was leaking)

Had the door seal TSB done (both seals were torn near the mirrors)

Had the reverse lamp switch replaced (they were inop)

The bill to DCX was $1392. 22

That's good news. It is encouraging to hear that there are some really good Dealers out there. You are doing the right thing by telling the public about them.

Wayne,

Thank you for the information. I need some warranty things taken care of and I was trying to decide which dealer to go to. Although Somerset is not very convenient for me, I may try them out.

Are they in Somerville nj on rt 22 E ?

Yes, on 22E. There is a cluster of dealerships, Dodge, Ford, Volvo and some gas stations between the commons and the on ramp for 287. Since I come from the east (heading 22W) I get off at the 202/206S ramp and use it as a jughandle to get 22E. They are about 35 mins away for me. The name of the writer was Tracy Lambert.

Hey Rob r, I see you have a wrangler with the mopar FI kit. How was the install? how does it run? From the pictures I've seen it looks just like a stock FI setup from a late model 4. 0.

Wayne,

I got one of the very first kits available back in '95 or '96. I had just rebuilt the motor and it was 100% stock. You are correct - the kit pretty much mimics a '94 4. 0 multiport FI setup. There are a lot of common parts between the kit and the '94 4. 0. The install was involved but the kit was surprisingly complete. What was amazing is the amount of vacuum hose, vacuum motors, canisters, and junk from the original carb set up that one could throw away. The engine bay is remarkably free of clutter. And this is 50 state legal. I would have cried if I had to put all that junk back on a freshly rebuilt motor.

My only complaint is that Mopar recommends 92 octane and I was getting detonation with Sunoco 93. I called Mopar and they had me call the fellow who did most of the development work on the kit. The solution was to drop the spark plugs a couple of heat ranges from the recommended range. I also had to go to a Jeep dealer and get a tech to back off the electronic timing. I was told to instruct the tech to use the "old" DRB tool but of course the tech didn't listen. The tech ended up calling Mopar who sent him to the same guy I spoke with and they got it straightened out. I haven't been keeping up but I believe the hot setup is to put a 4. 0 head on the 258 with this kit. They will bolt right on but a water jacket or 2, has to plugged on the head. This is supposed to help with the detonation.

I have about 21,000 miles on the Jeep since installing the kit back in '96. It has worked very well.

I can imagine how things cleaned up in the engine bay with all of the '80's carburetion and emmissions garbage gone! I see a lot of '97-'01 4. 0 Cherokees and I happen to like that powertrain. Interesting story about the timing. Is the ECM itself stock or something special?

Wayne,

The ECM is a Mopar unit with a Mopar Performance part number. I don't know how this might differ from a typical 4. 0 Cherokee or Wrangler in the '94 time period. The installation manual stated that electronics and fuel delivery service specifications should follow '94 guidelines.

Overall, the driveability is vastly improved. This is an unbelievable step up in performance that I would recommend to anyone with a carbureted 258.
