Here we go again. It's on here repeatedly I know, but... ...

I want to replace the stock tires with the same size as was on it 265-70-17. The truck: 2003 HO-QC-4x4-SWB-6spd. The terrain:SE Ohio and hardly ever off road if it is it is just to turn around in the grass. Primary function of the truck is hauling farm equipment. Usually never over 14k on a bumper pull trailer but, would like to upgrade to a 24' gooseneck before too long. I actually like the original tires(29k on them) and really only need 2 but hate the unmatched look. Are any of the tires out there THAT much better than the original BFG's

My choices are Michelins(which ones???-AT-M&S-LTX)

BFG AT's or You tell me.

The problem is that with everything I've read here, some guys get good miles out of the BFGS some don't same as the Michelins.

My main concern is mileage (both fuel and tire wear), wet weather/snow traction.

A little noise doesn't really bother me either.

TIA

I have ran BF Goodrich AT's on everything I own. I don't think you can beat them. I have my 2nd set on my 95 F 150, truck has 160,000 miles on it. The last set of BFG's had 80,000 and something miles on them with some tread left. It was possible to get at least 10,000 more out of them. Bu, I didn't want to chance it.

I have never gotten significant differences in tire wear from any of the good brands. Goodyear is definately the worst for me. But I think it is really where and how you drive. I think the most important thing is traction. I have tried many different tire Models and Manufacturers, I get to experiement because I get about 20-25k per set of tires on a good brand, and gotten as little as 15k out of a set of goodyears. I got 22k out of the stock Michelin LTX's on the 01 and the 03 Goodyears on a Dually for god sake look like I will get maybe 20k on the rears. The best overall tire I have found for cost and traction are Coopers. I am just about to buy my 5 set for my 01. I also have their studded snows in the shed. But I think you will find some guys that get 60k on a set and some that get 20k on the same tires on the same truck.

If you are getting 30k out of a set of good tires, then that is probably a good baseline. If someone chimes in a says they run brand X and they will get you 50k, that is probably not true, if you keep your same location and driving style.

Buy the tires that you like and see how they stack up to stock. Then change if they don't meet your expectations.

I also have an 03 HO 6speed With bfg at's. I hate them!! I pull a 20ft bass boat and a 24 ft goose-neck and have had 6 out of 8 tires go bad. . I have been told this is because Michelin changed the rubber compound when they took over BFG. . They are ok if your truck is for show, but if you plan to have a load on the tires they tear up to easy. . They also pick up allot of rocks in the tread so if you like you paint take one last look at it before you get bfg at's... It will never look the same again. .

I guess I should only be looking at "E" rated tires then?

I have to be able to pull my loads and don't have time for screwing around with flats and such, which is why Goodyear wasn't mentioned. Now I guess I'm back to square one. Everything that looks like it might be good isn't avilable in the "E" load range.

I've had great luck with the last 6 sets of BFG's I've had on various vehicles.

You could probably buy 4 slightly used take offs with only a couple miles on them for the price of the 1 or 2 new ones. Take a peek in the classifieds and eBay, since lots of folks are changing tires and wheels right after buying the truck. Hope this helps.
