Allright auto transmission gurus... . need some help. Why does it feel like my truck shifts three times when O/D is off? I thought 4 speed auto meant three gears plus overdrive??? With accelerator 1/2 to 3/4 throttle I feel three shifts 1-2 , 2-3, 3-what do i have another gear or a crappy transmission problem? I let it do all that and then turned the O/D on and it came in. (to eliminate the O/D button not working???) Like I said it feels like 5 different gears. I feel stupid for asking but have no other options right now. transmission shifts pretty good in all gears except for when it gets to 3rd (or 4th:) ) it goes through two shifts ( from a dead stop good amount of go pedal) then comes up to about 2200 to 2500 rpms then feels like it shifts then drops to about 1500 to 1800 when fianally done shifting. Im confused any help????? Thanks as always my friends.

You probably feel the 3rd gear torque converter lock-up. It feels alot like another gear shift.

Steve

The extra "shift" you feel is the Torque converter clutch locking up.

With the OD off, you get:

1-2, 2-3, 3-lockup

With OD on:

1-2, 2-3, 3-OD, OD lockup

The big drop in rpms comes when the T/C clutch locks up... ... as close to 100% effecient as you can get with an auto.

Chris

edit: damn too slow with the post again. :D

Try this to prove it. Get cruising along on the highway, nice flat section. Stay steady on the throttle and just touch the brake (only enough to turn the brake lights on), you'll feel the torque converter unlock.
