2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Upgrade to rear disc brakes?

I am in need of replacing my rear drums real bad, the PO ran them way past the rivits to the backing plate, so I searched here for info on changing to rear disk. I found lots of info and a list of Dodge part #'s. So, if dodge has the parts then I thought well NAPA should be able to get them also.

So, the total from Dodge was about $800-$900, the good news is that everything but the backing plates is available from NAPA for $450. Now the deciding factor was that the replacement drums for my 98 3500 4x4 were about $150 ea. So as you can see it is not that much more for the disk to convert my truck over.

I have a list of each NAPA part number and the price for each piece if anyone wants them. :D

I'd definately be interested in seeing a list of these parts. The rear brakes on my truck are going to need attentioin soon and I'd much rather have rear disks than drums.

Thanks,

Mike

parts list

I would like a copy of the list as well. My brother works for Napa. :D May be a discount for TDR members.

rear disk

Yes Dan,

I realize that other parts are involved. Most of them are Dealer only, but what an upgrade. With the price of the main parts less than $500, it seem stupid to waste $300 on new drums when I could spend it towards the disk setup. Besides the backing plates and the proposioning valve, most everything else is available aftermarket. The Napa list included hoses and pads, and all the attaching hardware.

Thanks, Tim

Please include me. Thanks for offering to share your information.

The list

Ok, Ok,

Here is the list for a 2001 3500 4x4 with 2 wheel ABS.

Brake pads AE7752-M $68. 49

Brake hoses (need 2 ea) 381367 $15. 99

Brake rotors (need 2 ea) 880020 $68. 99

Caliper 242-3134 $62. 49

Caliper 242-3135 $62. 49

And Core charges for the Calipers $27. 50 ea

For a grand total of $443. 54 :D :D

Hope this helps, Tim

I just called the dealer and they said that the caliper brackets list for $82. 50 per side and the proportioning valve is $108.

So that brings the total to $718. 54 unless there is anything else I'm missing?

Later,

Good info. Thanks.

I have been thinking that would be the thing to do instead of spending money on the drums.

I'm wondering if those would be the same parts for my 96' Dana 70.

Been there, done that.......

The backing plates on my 01 were different on the Dana 80 axle. I had to torch off the existing flanges, fabricate new ones and weld them on. Not for the faint of heart.

Parking brakes are a whole other story. All new cables to just under the drivers door. I think the backing plate came with all the parking brake pads.

With my set up I wasn't worried about the proportioning valve, I did change out to the larger master cyclinder though. If you keep the old just make sure to check fluid more often. As pads wear the fluid needed is way over that of the tiny drum cylinders.

I still have a flange that was slightly off but will make a good template if anyone is interested.

Good luck,

i don't wanna rain on anyone's parade either

but isn't there a company out there that has a kit for the swap? in the $700 range with parking brake. no parking brake is cheaper. i think there is a member that did the swap with this kit.

i'll definitely do the swap someday... . sooner if i win the lottery!

The kit is for 2500's......

I believe they are working on one for 3500's but they have also said that for the last 2 years.

At the time I did mine it was the only way to go.

Check out "The street Rod Manufacturing Company" They work really well, and i am extremely pleased with the braking.

By the way cost was $805. 00 delivered to my door.

Big White Beast,

Call them directly, they mention the dana 80 under the dana 70 listing. They also state their kit will not fit dana 80 with 16" dual rear wheels.
