i built a pulling motor for street driving, and have great power, but no smoke, i need to know what parts i am missing to get more power and some smoke. here is my recipe.

95 motor standard, balanced crank

ported, polished, and o-ringed head

marine cam and pistons

260 hp. marine pump

#10 plate, 4000rpm kit

370 inj. stock hx35 turbo

dynos 300hp/1000tq

i have 40# of fuel pressure to the inj pump, timing is crisp but not obnoxious, boost is 35# under heavy pedal through the gears, and pyro never sees 1100deg. tests are empty truck, and it is hard to hold on, truck is awesome to drive. any help to get some smoke and more power would be nice. then i can come down to play.

Adjust the star wheel more, position of camplate move more forward. adjust the preboost screw on the back of the AFC housing put more preload on the spring. other than that I dont know... ... . Rick:confused:

got everything maxed out, plate forward, star wheel turned, even ran without plate. no change. marine pump was cheap, and the guy told me peak power was at 2600 rpm, and that is where it is according to the dyno. maybe need larger delivery valves, when i timed it it looked like stock dodge ones?

transmission?

Power Grizz

I know you're not gonna hook that 5-speed Getrag up to THAT motor:eek: ... shoot... it won't hold up for what you plan to do. . I was making 250/675 TQ on my 93' and it was falling apart. I suggest mating the NV4500 {5-speed}, with a South Bend Clutch up to it;)

have been running the getrag for 100k, under severe torque, my original rotary pump motor was 215hp 1000tq to the ground. had a nv4500 in a previous truck, when i changed that clutch i took off the top cover too look and see what is different from a getrag. found not much difference(brass vs steel syncros, aluminum rear cover, and the nv has bigger bearings), but i am not a transmission expert. but i will install a nv in the future. i have a mitchell pulling clutch=works great for daily driving and best at pulling. my drivetrain is strong and built to handle what i want to produce from the motor.

need more ideas on where my smoke is hiding???

Good question on the smoke. The HP seems low also. Torque is real strong. Mine dynoed 417hp and the torque is above 900 somewhere and I have less goodies than you and it smokes big time. My guess is the pump needs massaged, what delivery valves are in it?

power grizz, you are complaining about something most desire. Good power (tons of torque) with low EGTs and no smoke. I think the key to your no-smoke problem is the work you have done to the cylinder head and the cam.

Now, the fuel plate and pump combination is probably where you should do some research. I don't know much about the 260HP marine pump. I suspect this marine engine makes power with a mild pump and big injectors rather than the other way around like a 215 HP truck engine?!?

The #10 plate, as you probably know, gives lots of mid range fuel but has defueling on the top end which is why you can make big torque but low HP numbers. This pump probably will respond better to an automatic plate profile with less top end defueling. You will get high EGTs using that stock turbo though!

As previously mentioned by Todd G, a 4 or 0 will really wake things up. Keep in mind that a 0 has no profile to it. As drawson told me in Calgary, "your right foot is now your torque plate. " Please update this thread if you try a different fuel plate.

called up doug at enterprise engine and asked him what it could be. he said delivery valves. so i ordered them and got them in tonite. :--) lots of smoke, dunno the exact power increase but it sure made a difference. the original delivery valves looked like stock ones, and i noticed a change in the ones from enterprise. i thought i read once where the 370 inj. needed larger delivery valves to inject enough fuel properly. it will be a week before i can get on the dyno and then i will try a #4 plate.

there are no other diesel pullers in my area, so i would like to have smoke to show off. kinda hate sounding like an alcohol tractor(whistle and no smoke). otherwise i would leave the truck as is.
