2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Good Shop in San Jose, CA to work on my truck

Well this is a 2 part message,



First, I ordered the EGR severe service upgrade for the 2500 and now I am getting cold feet on my ability to do the job myself. I have done major things on my CJ-7 but I am afraid of having my truck down for months while I slowly go through the steps like an anal-retentive idiot. Plus I am VERY afraid of doing the job wrong and killing my wife and dog coming down the Sierras . (Maybe some words of encouragement? ) So is there a shop near San Jose Ca which people trust?



Second, Is there a shop near San Jose Ca which people trust... For any general maintenance. Cummins west is close by but I have called them and they don't deal with things like tranys and what not. The closest Trany shop I have found, does the ATS is Stockton, Collins Injectors. A bit far for a desk jocky, 9-5 employee such as myself. (Basically getting out there on a weekday for them to look at my truck is out of the question, unless I took a day off of work. )



I called DTS and they don't have any shops they would refer me to, to do their install. Are there really no quality shops in the area?

There is a San Jose Ramrunners meeting tonight at 7:00 at the Coco's restaraunt on Hamilton Ave and Central Av in Campbell.

There are a lot of good guys in the club with a WEALTH of information. Look up Blair Pine, he should be able to steer you n the right direction... he is one of the few good people left in the world!

IW, regarding your auto trans, we have had good service from the Suncoast products. There is a shop on Almaden near Capitol that has done a number if installations. One of the fellows at the meeting will be able to provide you with the name of the shop.



The best deal I've found as far as transmission component stuff goes would be my local guy. He charges $350 for a TC & VB install.

Blair Pine directed me to Dan's Transmissions in San Jose 2 years back for my South Bend Clutch install. Absolutely fantastic service. Jim did the install as I sat on his couch and watched. Awesome guy and great shop. I have the receipt at home, or I'd post their phone # and address.

Blair also sent my truck over to Dan's to have my Suncoast TC and VB installed. It's only been a couple of weeks. . but everything looks great so far!

Dan's Transmissions!... ... ... ... ... boy, that does a number on me. In 1974 i was a brand new graduate of an in service two week trans overhaul course and being loaded with every transmission that failed in the San Jose post office jeep fleet. The shop sent me to Dan's whenever I had a question so I spent half of most days there with Dan. He taught me all I needed to know and much more without ever charging anything and no matter what obscure part I needed he had one somewhere out in the back. Great old fashioned kinda guy who sorta' adopted me when there wasn't any other help available. I'd imagine that Dan must be long retired or gone now and his traditions are carried on by his son - I think his name is John. . Just seeing the name of the shop flashed me back almost thirty years!

KRS you are right Dan is long retired and his son Phil is running the show with the same great values that Dan had for years.

Phil. yeah, I guess that's the name. He wasn't there all the time back then, or I didn't see him much because I went to see Dan... . Good to hear that Dan's still kicking and if you know them much ask Phil to mention to Dan that the dumb kid from the post office still thinks of him and benefitted all through the years from his good sense way of doing things. I moved on from building transmissions to a legal/managerial role but Dan's way of looking at the world stuck with me and served me well in a number of ways.



If Phil is carrying on the business the way that Dan did, and that would be tough in the mad scramble that's necessary to get by now, then Dan's is the place for transmission work in San Jose, CA. I've got no doubt of it.
