Hmmm. 14 Non Gated then... and no mods. Or 16 Non Gated and little mods.

I don't have a wastegate now... nor do I want one.

And I don't want to move my exhaust pipe back to fit anything longer than stock.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!!!

Today I installed an ATS monifold and a 14cm w/g housing. I went with the w/g unit for two reasons - insurance, and the possibility of twins later. I set the gate at 40 psi. On the test lap around the neighborhood I immediatly noticed a decrease in heat overall but especially under high boost. It wasn't warmed up enough to really push it but I was at 25 psi and around 900* - wasn't like that before. With stock manifold and a 16cm housing I would have been near 1100 degrees - so a 200* difference, and that's huge. The ATS unit comes with a nice 'factory' port job but I blended in the edges just for good measure. As well I port-matched the manifold and collar to the gasket and... well... it runs cool as a cucumber.

The gated 14 works just the same as a non-gated, but I decided to use the gated version just in case I ever wanted to really crank up the old girl... or go with twins (the top turbo has to have a gate).

I can say now that I have run everything from a 12 to a 21, and I like the 16-18 housings for my all around use. I traded my w-g12 for a nwg16, straight across, and will never go back to a 12.

I had a H1C/14 for a while, but noticed little difference in EGT or boost over a 12 (both high).

I then went back to a 18 (sold housing for extra cash). No difference in EGt, less boost. Tells me the engine worked less to get the same boost, and was overall more efficient.

Bought my stage4 turbo (used from ebay- $350 to my door). Put it on, with the 12 on it and ran it for a while. Similar EGT to the 18, with much more boost. Compressor size (60mm/ 6wheel) offset the extra restriction of the 12.

Traded for the 16 (ported). Put it on. No gain in EGT, lost 4-6psi boost across the board. Peak EGT might have gone up 50deg, but a 30deg difference in ambient temp will do that, too. Once again, the same scenario as when I went from 14 to 18.

I will keep my 16 for now.

With a stock intake hose, PG7 air filter, and 4" tail pipe (ok, 4" from teh transmission crossmember, but still stock ahead of there), I get plenty of turbo whistle, at idle, acceleration, and cruise. So much, that I am looking into more sound insulation if I start towing again. Turbo pitch gets on my nerves at 75-80mph. Part of it is the straight exhaust, part is the compressor upgrade.

I agree with Forrest- the HX35 will whistle well, silencer ring or not. On my 91, I didnt notice any difference with or without it.

Forrest, How do you like the Zilla?

I want to get one with my Mods I have now or I can back down to 1. 6's or 275's

Also is the FE Really Grabby, I need a clutch NOW... Im slipping mine on lvl3 in 4th gear...

Daniel,

Which Turbo could I get that makes the most noise?

I want it to be loud!

Recently, I noticed the UPS trucks making Whistle on the Start-up and Idle? Anyone have a clue what they are running?

not a huge fan of the dodgezilla for what you get for your money. . I prefer the s300 based turbos. It's a decent turbo, but doesn't flow enough on the exhaust side. I'd rather have a regular old HX40.

problem w/ the little holset stuff is you're limited to about 40psi. I run my sps62 between 48 and 55psi depending on drive pressure.

the FE isn't bad. only thing that kinda sucks is backing up a trailer, but I run empty 99% of the time and the biggest trailer I have to maneuver is maybe 5-6k lbs. but I've got a buddy who hauls HEAVY constantly with an FE and no problems. It's a little jerky backing a trailer, but it won't hurt anything.

the OFE just won't hold enough for me and I don't like dual disks. the FE is perfect for my needs :)
