Looking for evidence of how to tell that an injector is failing and not just dirty I can across the following document. There are great illustrations within including oscilloscope waveforms. I think a lot could be revealed by looking at the waveforms ( voltage and current ) of these injectors particularly comparing to one another in same engine as in my case where there seems to one that occasionally doesn't behave. USB oscilloscopes can be had for $100 that would do adequate job connected to a laptop, current clamps that connect to scope about the same cost.
