Tell me about it. When I was in the Navy, we had the capability to pretty much destroy all of our Crypto gear on the ship in case we were about to be overtaken. Most of that was a result of the Pueblo incident and lessons learned. I hope our guys are safe and I hope the Chinese can't figure out modern technology that's been fried. Somehow, I don't think the gear was destroyed. Clinton probably had the SECNAV remove all capability to destroy sensitive gear on US warships and planes for anything operating around China. You know they are friendly. Why else would they contribute to our elections.

CF - "W" doesn't need to know much about international affairs. He has both Cheney and Powell on his staff and as long as he listens to them, he'll get this thing done quickly and properly.

I'm just amazed that the stupid Chinese aren't falling all over themselves to get our people back. What a political coup that would be! They're really incredibly stupid when it comes to politics and PR. I suspect we'll never get the plane back, though I wouldn't bet on the Chinese getting to keep it, either.

Here's how I'd play it if I was the Premier: Put the crew up in the best quarters available. Get the US people in their immediately. Arrange transport back to Japan or the US - at Chinese cost! Make a statement that it was an unfortunate incident that happens in the international game of cat and mouse that goes on every day, everywhere. When the crew declared an emergency, in accordance with international law and ICAO, we granted them immediate landing permission and notified the US.

Or something like that. You know how many markers that would earn them from us, since we are SO politically correct and all. Sheesh.
