Just bought my first 12valve and love the way it runs but wanted a lil more. slid the stock fuel plate forward as well as the afc housing and adjusted the starwheel forward too. Ran awesome, EGT's were great nothing over 1100 at full throttle with barley a haze of smoke. my friend said put a boost elbow in it. so i did. and took it for a test run to feel the difference. ran great for the first 100ft in till the waste gate made a loud blow off noise. this was yesterday. today while driving it has no power bottom end or top end and a ton! of smoke and high EGT's. put the stock elbow back in, with no effect to the EGT's, power, or smoke. What happed?! still starts and runs but absolutely no power and i cant even pass a car without hitting 1200 degrees. Thanks. . BF

Sounds to me like one of the intake boots popped off. Check all the rubber boot fittings/connections between the turbo/intercooler/engine.

BForsman,

Ditto x4; also turbo failure or stuck exhaust brake? My former 98. 5 had a BD exhaust brake that was vacuum actuated. I was living in Iron Mountain, MI... 100 miles north of Green Bay WI... and suddenly no power high boost/EGT, lots of smoke and no power. I called BD and they knew exactly what was wrong. The cold temps... 20 degrees below zero, and the sintered bronze breather had frozen the exhaust actuator in the closed position. They told me to reverse the vacuum hoses to the actuator control valve and the return spring held the brake open. Then I plumbed a hose from the control valve into the interior as instructed and put the sintered bronze filter behind the glovebox where there was just a hint of intake woosh occasionally.

yep it was the boot at the cooler. Thank you for the help! :) i went around and checked all the clamps and re tightened those old things. hopefully it wont happen again. btw put the boost elbow back in and got my extra lil bit of power back.
