Goodyear GSA strange wear pattern

Past 2 months have noticed really odd wear pattern on my front tires. So last week I have the beast looked at by a very well known and respected shop here in town and the man says nothing is wrong with the truck. So off to Goodyear for a rotate and balance. Since I wanted to put the funny looking ones on the rear, they were all to happy to charge me $120 for 4 mount/dismounts. Well, here 6 days and 2900 miles later, guess what getting the same wear pattern already !!! :{ Back to the front end shop, double check, everything hunky dory. Man says Goodyears problem, have them call me! Friend of mine that used to work at a DEALERSHIP said perhaps the sidewalls in the tires are getting weak in the year they have been on truck, first set had rips in the sidewall, 1/2 inch out from bead, just like quite a few others here, this time they are getting " scallopped" on the inside and outside edges, any ideas?? Truck has 94k on it these tires 52k in the past 12 months.

Change the fronts with the inside duals like the manual shows, and you can rotate them yourself in 1/2 hour or less with air.

Yes, did that once already on the current set. What I want to know is why they are wearing like they do and Goodyear does not want to recognize thier POS tires as being inferior for a real truck. What I did last week was flop the 2 front and the outside rears and moved accordingly so that with a lot of luck maybe I can get a few more months out of these things. The rears are wearing thinner then the fronts do for some reason. But after just 2900 miles in 6 days they are showing the same wear pattern again and my front end man says its the tires fault, nothing wrong with the truck itself, and he has had his shop going for a loooong loooong time now. $2200 plus for another set??? A set of Alcoa's or Rickson's 19. 5's are really starting to sound good now!

You have 52k on the set of tires? Seems like for the most part you have done good. I would get another set of tires. Maybe some BFGoodrich A/T tires?



If not, go with the 19. 5's your talking about



Wierd wear patterns like cupping can be associated to 3 things: Bad shocks, unbalanced wheels/tires, or Cheap tires...

I just went through this

I just had the same issue. Right front had some weird scalloping and the left front had normal feather edges like I would expect with a miss alignment. I had my dealer, who unlike some here, treats me very well check my alignment and rotate my tires for the second time since the truck was new. Toe was out (-. 038 if I recall). We dismounted and put on the set that had not been on the front of the truck yet. I first rotated at 18K and my truck now has 31K. I was surprised at how far the rear tires that we just moved to the front had worn down. The rears seem to wear faster than my 2500 with the 16" tires did. I'm wondering about the Michelins. Anyone running their 235-80R17E tire? They are available according to the Tire Rack's website for $174. Ken Irwin

Hate to bash but, Goodyear GSA's are garbage.

we just put the michelins on my moms dually. very nice tires, used an amazingly low amount of weight to balance for such a big tire. the goodyears are JUNK! hers had 50k on it, still tread left, but sidewalls cracked wide open. my truck has 25k, sidewalls starting to crack. I see michelins in my future.

Yep, that's right... about 30 minutes using my air tools and do the final tighten with my torque wrench. I rotate mine at each oil change by the Owner's Manual and all six Goodyears are wearing evenly across the width of the tread. I measure them with a tread depth gauge. Also, so far, no breaks in the sidewall near the bead. I keep 80 PSI all six since my truck is loaded very heavy 95% of the time.

Feel free my brother, just got back from Goodyear and damn near took thier strut demonstration thingie and wrapped it around the managers neck #@$%! #@$%! So and such tells me "go to Dodge" they sold you the truck and he was not too pleasant about..... sooooo... what do I do, well... . you get one guess, I'm still shaking here an hour later from it all, DAMN, haven't felt like taking someone out like that for a long time!!!! Why can't people just do thier jobs and stop passing the buck on down the line????

Yep Eric, 52k in 12 months, still have over 50% tread left( where it aint worn down due to oddball wear) Sorry but at $2200 for another set these should not be doing what they are. BFG's , not on this rig, don't believe they have a load range "E" in this size.

Yeah, when all my GSA's were cracking on the side walls I went to Goodyear (a company store) and they told me to "go to Dodge". They wouldn't touch them. I took it upon myself and got a cheaper deal than Dodge would give me. BTW, Discount Tires was trying hard to take care of me (they would do the prorates, but only against more GSA's. I kindly said "no"). Since the Michelin weren't available (and there was a HUGE availability issue of any tires in this size at the time, I went with the General AmeriTrac TR's. Several people here have complained about them, but they have been good to me so far (about 6,000 miles and yes, I tow and carry heavy). Not to mention, I got 6 mounted and balanced with road hazard warranty for under $900. Still had to wait 30 days to get them, though...
