Has anyone had any troubles with the Goodyear Marathon load range "c" and "d" camper trailer tires? My friend has blown out a couple so far. They are not very old and have excellent tread. Rumors are out and saying that they had a "silent recall". Any help appreciated. .

Something I read in a recent Trailer Life magazine indicated that Goodyear will relace Marathon tires that do not have the circled "S" right behind the word "Marathon" on the sidewall.

I checked my tires and all of them have the circled "S", so I guess that means they are good ones.

Two Goodyear Failures

Hi 3dracer and Doc Tinker:

Just got back from a 3000 mile trip and blew two Goodyear Marathon tires at different times on the trip. Both tires were load range C tires on a dual axel 5er. Both were inflated to 45-50 psi and not driven over 65 mph. Lots of tread on the tires and no sidwall cracks were visable. Outside temperatures where the failures occured were between 80-95 degrees. Both tires APPEARED to fail from tread seperation BUT its hard to tell for sure after a distructive blow out.

Replacing the remaining Goodyears with Tow-Master Load Range D tires.

Marathons suck, circle s or not. I lost all 4 of mine(15"D's) within 10,000 mi(about 2 months). 2 were blowouts, 2 were slipped belts caught before they seperated. All 4 less than a year old, not overloaded, overheated or underinflated, 50% tread left.

From what I've read on here I don't think anybody makes a "good" trailer tire.

tire problem

EKarr, some trailers come with the tires overloaded before you put anything in the trailer. Did you weigh yours?

I have Goodyear Marathons on my trailer, and I've had pretty good luck with them. I have lost two tires to blowouts, but they both were over 7 years old and were dry-rotted. They still had most of the original tread even though they had been pulled over 50,000 miles.

I have weighed my trailer and I know the tires are not overloaded. I inflate them 2 or 3 psi over the maximum rated pressure to hedge against a slow leak and they are always cool to the touch when I come in off the highway. I always do a walk around to check the tires immediately after stopping and have caught 3 or 4 punctures before they became blowouts. I figure an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Ph# to call

Here is a number for goodyear that I used when I had marathons on my old trailer. They should tell you if they have a recall going or not.

Goodyear Marathon.........

This is an old post of mine, but it is just what you were talking about:

This is a good time to bring up a situation that happened to me this summer. While towing in Northern Ca this summer I had a huge bubble on the outside of one of my trailer tires. This was the second one on a two year old RV. I switched it out and kept going until I got to Chico Ca. The tires were all Goodyear Marathon radial "D" rated trailer tires. I found a Goodyear dealer in Chico and showed him the tire. His response was that he wanted them all.

The next day I took the trailer to his shop. He called Goodyear for authorization to change the set of tires. He was told that the Goodyear Marathon had in fact had a recall for tread seperation, but is was the "E" rated tire that had experienced tread seperation, not the "D" rated tire. That left me to ponder just replacing the one tire, or paying for all four. Fortunately the dealer was knowledgeable about these things, and called Goodyear back and got a different customer rep this time. He authorized the change of all of the tires on my trailer. I only paid labor and balancing.

The moral of the story here is that tread seperation is not normal for any tire that is manufactured correctly (and not overloaded). The tires were new, the trailer was new, and I was far from overloaded. If you have Goodyear Marathon Trailer Radials, take note!!!!

Contact a Goodyear dealer and inquire about the tires on your rig. I put the new model Series E tires on the trailer, and have not had a problem since. Be careful out there!!!!!!!!

They should pay

I had 2 failures and Goodyear replaced all 5 tires with "circle S" and even paid for damage to underside of 5er caused by blowout. Call the 800 # and they will help you get the problem resolved.

WestTN, actually weighed it several times a day as I pulled commercially and had no choice. NEVER overloaded.

As a retired truck driver and Mechanic i know how important it is to check your tires on a daily basis. My 33 ft fithwheel came with good year wranglers and after 3000 miles started to crack on the side walls. Goodyear said they would replace them for no charge to me but i wanted something better so i went with goodyear G159 steel wrap 10 ply medium trk tires, size is 235-85-16 . That was three years ago and the tires are great and handle great also. With my 3500 cummins power and all we wiegh in at 19,800 and have run on in interstate up to 85mph for short times but run 70mph on a regular trip. I have 10 ply Michlin steel wrap xps tires on my trk and like them very much also. 40,000 on them so far and still have 9/32 left. And they are the traction tread. Richard

Goodyear Is Being Fair

The TDR and some wonderful members just saved me at least $200.

I took the advice of several of the members who have posted on this form and called Goodyear on their 1-800 number AND

They are picking up the bill for some new tires for my 5er. They have agreed to replace my Goodyear Marathon Load Range C tires (no circle 's') with Load Range D tires. My cost will be the difference between the "c" and "d" price and any tread wear on the existing tires. Pretty sweet huh. I think it was the fact that I had two failure so close together and on different axels that made the difference. I went into detail about how the tires failed, my maintenance intervals (pressure checks) place where replacement tires were purchased on the trip and the local Goodyear dealer I had discussed the condition of my tires with.

As a side note Goodyear stated that there isn't a recall program for the Marathon Load Range "C" tires however they will stand behind any tire they manufacture.

Thank you one and all and thank you Goodyear.

I REASON LIKE RHOBLITT

I run the now dicontinued Cooper C120s on my truck. Man what a tire! Two ply steel SIDEWALLS!!!!!!! I'm told they're 100,000 mile over the road tires! Even when working at max load.

My fiver is still OEM with Goodyear 16" E's. I keep a close eye on them always and keep them inflated to max psi (80). 30,000 trailer miles later no problems yet...

I blew two Goodyear Marathon tires within 250 miles of one

another. Four years old , well maintained, not overloaded.

They had about 6000 miles on them.

They were both on the back axle of my 5th w.

The weight distribution of the tires were within load range too.

I called Goodyear and they replaced all 5 tires plus they sent me $1350. 00 to repair the sheetmetal on the back of the 5thw.

I was a happy camper after that.

Call Goodyear. They will pay! You must deal with a Gemini Goodyear Dealer.

:)

While I am not a Goodyear fan, I sure like the looks of the G159. If I were pulling a heavy 5er, I would mount a set of the G159 "G" rated and run them at their 110# rating. I think you could kiss your tire problems good bye. These units that are 10,000# and running 15" tires are asking for trouble regardless of what the rating says on the tire.

Barry. . where do I get a set of 16" rims that will fit my Jayco with 6 lug pattern? I've found white spoke wheels, but I'd like some nice chrome or aluminum wheels like I've seen on some of the higher end trailers.

Doc

Doc the bolt pattern is not that hard to match. Make sure if you go to an aftermarket wheel that is has the load carrying capacity that you need. If you can't find what you are looking for, call me and I will check with my suppliers and have them dropped shipped to you from the nearest warehouse.

I bought four Goodyear load range E tires about four years ago. after the third handgrenaded at speed , I replaced the Goodyears and I'll never have another. In the heat of summer in the south they will blow.
