My 01. 5 truck should be in soon. On my 97 4x4 I Ran Wrangler AT,s and I pretty much liked them they lasted about 40,000 miles before i changed them for the Workhorse Extra Grips. I dont think i like them as well, the truck seemed to wonder all over the road and was hard to control, I assume it was the tires because the truck did not do this prior to the tires. I like the off road look but still would like to get decent mileage from a tire and not to much road noise. Do any of you guys have any good advice ref. goodyear tires. I am considering the new Wrangler MTR, but i am affraid it my be to aggressive and load. The Wrangler AT/S I don't now about or the TD's. I prefer Goodyear because my Dad works at the local factory and i get a good discount or a might consider another brand. Any idias?

My '95 came stock with Goodyears, they were worn out at 17k,not sure if it was my driving style or the tires. I have had set of Toyos on for the last 90k and they look like they will go another 50k easy. My . 02

I also use Goodyear tires because they are the only tire made in the US.
I bought a set of Goodyear G 159 tires. They lasted 85k miles pulling 37' 5th whl. 60k miles of it. Included a 4 round trips over the Alaska Hyw. and a trip to Cabo San Lucas. They had 20% tread left when replaced. They are 4 ply all steel belts and highway tread. They also come in an aggressive tread and make no road noise and I think they are G 178's. They come in many many sizes also.
Bridgestone, Toyo and Michellin all make a comparable tire and when shopping found them all to be within $3 of one another, about $145 ea. Sounds like alot but you do not have to replace them as often and therefore the cost per mile is the same or cheaper than those orig. equip. junk(Wranglers)as well as the safety factor of commercial tires on your rig.
Check out the UPS and Fedex trucks. Also 18 wheelers and buses. You will find G 159's on most all of them.

I think you will find other tires made in the US besides Goodyears. Like Cooper and Kelly just to name 2 that I know of.

How did you like the ride of the G-159's? I was looking at them but was talked out of them by guys that said "you will need to give your passangers a barf bag they ride so rough".

I bought Coopers instead. Load Range E with a 60K mile treadwear warantee

mc,I'm running 265/75R16 load range D with AT tread. These were the largest tire that would fit my rims, and do a much better job filling in those huge wheelwells than the stock Goodyears. Would of gone for highway tread but they were out of them and I was in a hurry. I think the AT tread looks better(meaty)anyway, but they are a little louder. $180 each and $7 ea. for siping. I highly recommend siping, besides better traction on wet and snow the siping makes your tires run cooler and last longer, well worth the added expence.

I have had two sets of Wrangler RT/S's on my wifes 1500 4x4 gasser. The first set only made it 12500 miles and small rocks penetrated right through the tred. Goodyear replaced them ( after some yelling). I dont think the new ones will hold up either. If you are set on Goodyear (I'm sure the hek not)make darn sure you use at least a 6 ply or better( I would recommend the GSA) My 2 cents.

They don't call them BADYEARS for nothing. Mine were so out of balance that they had to be replaced under warranty. Unfortunately I got more Badyears. My new BFG's are sitting in the garage waiting for the new wheels.

TowPro,

I ran the G159's slightly under inflated, approx. 65 psi, and the ride was fine.
To all... ..... all tires, like women, are not the same. You get what you pay for. A Cosco/Sams special will not last a long as a commercial tire. JMO.

Something else to note: The michelins I saw in BJ's were not the same ones that you think your looking at. The ones that the dealer sold have LTX on the sidewall, but the ones at BJ's had LX or LT but not LTX. I bet they were a different tire!

My original RT/S Goodyears lasted over 77,000. They had about 10-15,000 miles of tread left on them when I put on new Michelin LTX/MS. I did not like the Goodyears in the snow, but I don't like the Michelins in the snow either. I think the problem is not the snow, but the truck itself! I have a 2WD. I don't regret my choice of 2WD, but I have winter limitations.

My Step Dad's 92 Dodge 2wd came with Goodyears as stock and he only got 22,000 mile out of them. I bought the option to upgrade to Michelins on my 99 and how wish I had gone with Goodyear so they would wear out faster so I can upgrade to the 265's instead of 245's. The "M's" now have 18,000 and about 2/3rd tread left.

Craig:

I had installed a set of "Goodyear
Wrangler TD's" (265's) on my old
92'Ram. I only got about 15,000
miles out of those tires and they
rode terrible. The tire dealership
never was able to get the "shake"
out of the tires and steering.
Maybe they were a bad set, I don't
know. But since then I have been
using "B. F. Radial All-Terrain's"
on my 96'. I have had VERY good
luck with them and I am now on my
third set at 102,000 miles.

I know that tire choice on these
trucks is a "personal thing" as
I have talked to some members who
wouldn't have a B. F. G either.

Anyway, good luck!
