i'm thinking of getting these tires (305 70 R17) and was wandering how long the tread will last on aveage. I was talked out of the 315's so does anybody run this brand and maybe the tire size, if so how many miles you getting? Most of the miles i will be doing will probably be freeway but i love the looks of these more than the bfg all-terrain but if these tires only last 20-30 thousand miles then i will probably go with the bfg's. Thanks

I had a set on my durango they lasted about 40-50 thousand. Make sure you rotate them alot or they were wear bad and start jump turn square on you.

yeah my brother told me to rotate and balance every 5,000 miles to make them last forever. That sounded like a smart idea so i will probably do that.

Some people get 30K some get 15K I think it depends on the application and vehicle. With the weight of the CTD, Im guessing less mileage?



I was thinking of getting the MTR next, but I think my next tire will be another 285 size & am looking closely at the Cooper SST I think it's called, lot's of good reviews on this tire.

i've had the 305 mtr's on my truck for almost 40k..... 38k when i put them on and i've got 75k now... ... i figure they're good for another 5-10k... ... they ride rough... . mine are not balanced but it's a truck..... get a 300c if you want a nice ride

i kind of say the same thing to people who complain about there diesel being to loud. Buy a gasser if you want quietness. Oh and if you want a nice smooth truck ride, you buy a chevy not a real truck like a dodge. Anyway thats exactly the news i was looking for on how long they would last. Hopefully i can make them last that long but we will see. thanks

Had 315's on my 1/2 ton, and took them off when I traded for the CTD. Had about 30k on them when i swapped. Put another 10k on them on the CTD. They wear faster on the CTD, but alot of that probably has to do with the go pedal. They will last a good while if you can keep your foot out of it. Lately, I am realizing that any tire on our trucks dont last long with a Comp on 5x5 all day long! :-laf Plus, I put on 30k a year, so yeah, they go fast!

Not to get off track on the thread, but I have the Cooper STT's in a 285/70/17 size. A friend who runs an '03 Cummins has the 285/70/17 Goodyear MTRs. I believe our tires are rated for the same weight (3195 lbs). They are only D-rated tires (either one). He runs his in the winter time and rotated back to stockers for summer. I run mine year round.



According to the miles we have logged, the STTs seem to be wearing better than the MTRs. He drives almost exclusively freeway, whereas I drive a 50/50 mix, a lot of stop and go, plus many turns. I did my first rotation after 6500 miles, but was actually shooting for the 5k mark (when I do my oil changes). Tires from the rear were slightly flatter than the fronts (fronts round slightly due to turning), but all seemed in great condition. I was also towing almost ALL of the miles I put on my tires. The MTRs were primarily used on an empty truck, however he did have a plow on the front (quick disconnect so it was not on there all the time). The MTRs appear to be wearing quicker from the weight and limited turning that he does... They are already somewhat choppy and I think he only has 2 seasons since he put them on...



Everybody will have a different opinion. I think the Cooper STT is a great tire. The Goodyear MTR seems to be holding its ground, and has a lot of loyalty.



One thing to keep in mind - even though you are going to a 305 tire and decreasing gear ratio (hence - RPMs), I have found that the luggy tires (STT or MTR) seem to cost me about . 5 - 1. 5 mpg depending on if you are burning summer or winter blended fuel...

By the way - I _HAD_ the 315's... Be glad you were talked out of them! I ran them for 22-24k miles. They were fun! They looked Good! Man - did they eat my lunch for fuel economy! Even when adjusting for tire size and manually calculating the mileage, I think the width, soft compound, lower pressure (only up to 50 or 60psi) and gear ratio reduction hurt the way the tires worked. Keep in mind that I run balancing beads in my tires, so they should never go "out of balance" - however, I did get a bad shimmy around the 20k mark and never really got totally rid of it.



Now - with the Cooper STTs, a little louder ride (ok by me!) but NO shimmy what-so-ever (also using balancing beads INSIDE the tire).

I have a set of (4) 3rd gen chrome rims with 305-70-17's MTR's plus one spare rim with no tire for sale. About 15k miles, Rotated 3 times, fresh balance. $500 for the set, located in cincinnati, PM me if interested. They are off the truck now, but below is a pic of what they looked like when they were on.



By the way, awesome tire. Bought them after seeing Schied's use them back when they used street tires to pull.

I have MTR's on my Jeep. When I got them people said I would be lucky to get 30k miles. But I'm at 50k now and still going. I do rotate in the spare, so that mileage is over 5 tires. As others have said, they are notorious for being noisy when they get miles on them. Mine are very loud, but they are wearing fine, they are just noisy tires.



I will definately get another set for my Jeep. But they are probably noisier than I'd want on my truck, and I wanted to stick with the E load range, so I went with Procomp Xtreme All-Terrain on the truck.

I had my 315 BFG Spare under the truck... It was a little snug, but it fit. Therefore, 305s should fit no problem! I think the only thing I heard was that if you had a Mag-Hytec Rear Diff cover, you could not sneak the 315 past it. 305 might go by the Mag-Hytec though too!



Also, if you had a 5" exhaust it may get a bit tight under there, depending on how it [the exhaust] was routed.

Since you posted in the 3rd Gen forums, I _assumed_ that you have a 3rd Gen, but I wanted to clarify, as with my 2nd Gen, 285s were a tight fit!

yes it is a 3rd gen i need to work on my profile. I will post pictures of them after i get them on and i am 90% sure that i will get the wrangler mtr's. Give 2-3 weeks before i get them as i still have to wait for a few more pay checks. Thanks for your help guys.



p. s. after i get these depending on how they do i might try a mickey thompson tire but i think i have some good time before i decide.

You might look into a Mickey Thompson MTX or ATZ. You might like the price also.

I've managed 43K out of 305 MTRs. They rode nice but were louder than ATs. I just ordered Mickey Thompson MTZs to replace them for what it's worth.

If you're after looks, buy something else. If you're after traction and tough, these are hard to beat. I have used these tires extensively in sand and on rocky trails. On high speed gravel roads, you can out run anything on ATs.



As for tread wear. I expect to get about 30k at best. That is about two years of driving for me. I can't wait for the wear bars because I want the traction of deep tread. If you wait for the wear bars, you can probably get much more out of them.



I am always suspicious of high milage tread wear claims like with Procomps. High mileage => hard rubber => less traction in my estimation.

Just about to push mine off the truck this weekend, 315 75r16. They were great tires, like stated keep them rotated and you will get good wea ron them I am right around the 30k marker on it. Thats about 60 to 100 miles a day, 5 days a week. The only issue I had was towards the end missed a rotation and now got bad hop on the front passanger tire, but that could also have been the bad alignment job a shop around here did. Overall they were great tires, got 4 for $150 from a buddy, so they did their job well. Can tackle mud pretty well, sand is ok if you know what your doing, they will sing to you over the engine (i loved it though). And when it says puncture resistant it means business, picked up a nail took me 10-15 mins with a home-made repair, just tore the file to shreds. But I'm now going to try some A/Ts.
