Temp Gauge
Your temperature sender uses a ground return to make the gauge work. The gauge is supplied power (+) from the ignition switch and the temperature sender functions as a variable resistor connected between the gauge and engine block (-). Several possible areas could be causing the problem, the sender could be bad although it's not likely. The wiring between the sender and the gauge could be damaged or shorted. The ground between your engine and chassis could be poor. The coolant level in your engine could be low and not always in contact with the sender unit.
