Well... the long and short of it is this: If you want to haul things on a trailer, it's gonna be a gooseneck hookup. If you want a camper, it's gonna be a 5th wheel hookup.
There are of course exceptions, but by and large, this is the rule of thumb.
A gooseneck is a much cleaner setup with no hardware to take up bed space when not hauling your trailer. A friend of mine had his 5th wheel camper converted to a gooseneck type hitch for about $600. He loves it. One day he hauls cattle, the next day he hauls his home away from home--All with no hardware to fool with.
However, I don't know anything about the differences in towing or handling with one or the other.
I like the 5th. wheel set up. It is much easier to hitch up, at least with a good 5th. Also a 5th wheel does not require safety chains. The fifth wheel does take up space in the box, but most of them are easy to remove. I guess a lot of it comes down to personal preference. I usually change any trailers I buy to the king pin hitch as I change trailers back and forth several times a day.
Reverse fifth wheel is the best of both worlds. The fith wheel is on the trailer and the kingpin is in the truck bed, just like a gooseneck. Offers the stability of the fith wheel and the uncluttered bed of the gooseneck. That's what I have on my old Wells Cargo 38' fiver.
