Tracking the build on an 06

I know I will probably get a keyboard lashing for this, but I'll be honest with you all anyways. This evening I went to the neighbors to haul a load a hay for him. I scaled the truck and trailer empty, it is 14,900# empty. I went to the neighbors and loaded up the trailer with 30 large square bales. We went back and scaled again. Here was the axel weights.

Steer axle... ... ... ... 4240#

Drive axle... ... ... ... . 6460#

Trailer tandems... . 18000#

Total... ... ... ... ... ... 28700#

Funny thing is, with this load down a very, very rough paved road, there was no yanking, no jerking. I guess when I haul the pickup again, I better move it around to get it to pull nice. This is a heavy load, more weight then when I haul two trucks. I have 13,800# of hay on the trailer. The trailer is rated for 20,000# so I am not exceeding that, I have to go and check the tag on my door jamb, but I don't *think* I'm over on the truck axels, but I will bet I am over on GCVW.

Thanks for listening, I have my flame suit on for the guys that will holler. ;)

I think you will see a significant improvement with your load redistributed. I certainly have improved my rig with similar adjustments. Let us know how it turns out.

I did a little looking today and my door jamb reads 6084# for rear axel weight. I'm not really worried about the 400 or so I am over on the rear axel, truck wise. I am more concerned about the 600# I'm over on what the tires are rated for. Truck tires are rated for 2910 each which puts me at 5820# for the rear tires. I'll probably take one 500# bale off the front of the trailer and put it on the rear before leaving. Get a little more weight off the truck and put it more on the trailer.

Thanks again.

I see you are from Iowa, I would go to Keldermans and talk to Jeff Kelderman, there isn't anyone around that knows more about air ride suspensions and hitches. They make an air ride hitch, I did not know this, as I bought a TrailerSaver air ride hitch. I have towed a few trailers with Keldermans Air Ride suspension installed on them, you won't believe the difference in towing. Haddad's, in Pittsburgh, Pa. rents 5th wheel RV's and TT's for stars to stay in, and dressing rooms on movie sets. They have installed at least 50 of Keldermans Air Ride suspensions on their trailers, and claim they will get 2 to 3 times the life out of their trailers with them. I towed 2 of their TT's that were 45' + 7' tongue with a 10KW genset, was told they weighed 24K, and they towed like a dream. I have towed RV's for 11 yrs. now, and have never owned one, but I know if I ever bought one, the first thing I would do, is have Keldermans Air Ride suspension installed on it! I am not affiliated in any way with Keldermans, just have had real good service from them, and know they make great products, and stand behind them.
