It was what I expected. The injector pump is toast. He said they would replace it but they would not reinstall the fueling boxes. He attributes the problem to those. Funny how they've been in there for so long and I haven't had a problem til now. Oh well. It has to be done.

Jeff... sorry to hear about your pump, but it sounds like the dealer is working with ya on it... that is a big plus.
Evan Beck had a pump go out on his 98. 5, and he did not have any boxes... the dealer may have jumped to the "box" conclusion... too bad we can't find a common denominator to these failures.

Jeff,on the positive side they did find out what was wrong and getting it fixed. Let us know when you're burnin diesel again.

jeff , i'm not surprised that they wouldn't reinstall the fueling box , did you really expect them too ?

glad to hear you're up and running soon , make sure you are sitting down when they give you the bill , pump is 3k more than it should be if its coming from DC ... ouch

The dealer wouldn't put my box back on either and said it was the cause for the failure of the pump.

I must have missed this but, are they doing it under warranty? I haven't heard of a dealer doing warranty work after any serious mods have been installed so I'm assuming no... if not, what are they charging you (if I may ask)?

Hey Mr. Jeff Clark,
What were some signs that your injector pump was going out. ? Lopey idle?
Or did your pump just leave you stranded without warning?

BTW:Where is Lucas Tx. ?
I am in Lardo Tx.

If they voided your warranty because of the fueling boxes, anything that malfunctions in the engine and drive tran will be voided also, even your new injector pump they replaced. DC will asume you put the fueling boxes back on. DC will even try to void none drive tran issues. Sorry if I sound like an a$$hole but people need to be informed if they are going to BOMB there vehicles, maybe I can save some one the frustration of DC. Even dealers that seem freindly will void your warranty if they are faced with the problem of do I tell or loose my dealership for holding my tongue. Enough venting.

No they are not replacing my pump under warranty. The truck has over 100,000 miles for one. And since I installed the boxes I wouldn't expect them to replace it under warranty.

Vanman, the cost including installtion is $2500. Yes I know its high, but right now I don't care. The truck hasn't run in a month and I just want it back on the road.

Bomber, the truck had a lopey idle and was hard to start when hot. The truck started fine and ran smooth when cold. Lucas is 30 miles north of Dallas.

The injection pump went out on my 98. 5 last year. A couple days before it died it started having a loping idle after the engine was warmed up.

If it wasn't going to be covered under warantee, why not take it to Cummins? If you are paying the bill anyway, are their prices better? I'm certain they have more experience and I would trust their work further! Ray

I've pretty much accepted that I may have to replace an injection pump in the future... not that I'm happy about it. I was kind of hoping that by keeping a close eye on the lift pump pressures I might be able to avoid it but it looks like quite a few failures are not lift pump induced. Part of me is sorry I didn't get the 12v when I bought my truck in 98. In the long run I think they might be better bombing candidates... Jeff, really sorry to hear your truck has been down for so long. Good luck with it.

Ray, I tried Cummins first. They left me high and dry. I called them and they said no problem, they would look at it. 4 days after I got it there they called and said come and et it. They wouldn't touch it with all the "Hot Rod" parts on it. Go figure.

I'm with ya VAMAN!! I'm watching for a great price on one and will buy it and just put it on the shelf for the day mine lets go. I figure if I have it on the shelf mine will probably never die - just like insurance!

Great idea Steve. Tell ya what, if you do find a great deal and they happen to have two of them, well... you know the rest. #ad
By the way, has anyone gotten any feedback from Cummins on these failures? Any failure analysis? Any fixes? I've seen a lot of great R&D on lift pumps and lines but not much on the injection pump failures that are not related to lift pumps. This whole fuel system thing is extremely frustrating. I love my Cummins but hate the feeling that I'm walking on egg shells with my fuel system.

Has anyone had problems with the injector pump with their truck in stock condition?
I have a 98. 5 24v with 76k miles on it and so far no problems of that kind, just that it wants to run away once in awhile.

Jack,

Last year Evan Beck had an injector pump go south on his 98. 5(over 60k miles),and his truck was bone stock.
