This has been ongoing for a while. When i am starting off from a stop i get a binding growl till i get the wheels straight, turning right or left.

I have replaced the front U joints and checked all joints and found no problems. I did have a bad wheel hub assembly on the right side and replaced it. The binding feeling quits as soon as i get the wheels straight. On the right hub is a spacer marked 3/16 thick this side out ,Right side only. This is a dana60 4x4 on a 98. 5 CTD,Auto. Does anybody have any Ideas and what the heck is the spacer for??? I have ordered a new hub assembly for the left side thinking maybe it is causing the trouble. Sometimes i can start and round a corner without a problem . I am running 285/75/16 tires now but i think it was doing this before the tire upgrade. I would appericiate any imput .

Thanks Dirk

I believe one side has a spacer to offset the wheel just a bit. It's a standard thing. Leave it there.

I'm wondering if your growl isn't due to a power steering pump issue. I had a similar problem and replced the pump. That solved it. That was a couple years ago and I don't remember all the details, however.

thanks for the info on the spacer I will put it back, pulled it out last night to see if it made any difference,it didnt. I dont think it is the p/s pump i flushed it and put in synthetic ps fluid this winter WOW what a difference. I picked up a new hub this morning and will change it tonight. I dont know if my carrier bearing or front drive shaft could make this problem but will check them again while i have the truck supported tonite. Thanks for your imput Dirk

Well I changed the left wheel hub this morning, No difference . While i had the truck up i checked the front drive shaft, carrier bearing and all u joints under the truck they all look good with no movement while twisting or shaking. this is starting to p s me off Everything under the truck looks real good. I ran a dial indicator on the rotors and they are maybe . 10 wiggle on them If anybody else has any ideas what to check PLEASE chime in thanks dirk

Center axle disconnect. There is a vacuum motor on the PS of axle that engages the FE for 4x4. With the FE jacked up does the driveshaft spin when you spin the tire?

I have looked through the haynes manual and found no vacum motor for the ps of the axle. There is a vacume shift motor for engaging the 4x wheel drive, this works good.

Where would you jack up the FE to check this dirk

Jack up the RF tire and spin it. You can also spin the front DS with truck in park, both wheels down and it should spin freely. Hope this helps. Mike

Hi Mike thanks for your reply

I jacked up the rf tire and it spins,(feels like a pad may be dragging a bit) But it spins I put the truck down and lifted the lf also it spins good Put the truck down and spun the ds it is free also. Any more thoughts??

Dirk, make sure the power steering fluid level is OK. You can try changing it out to see if that helps. It is a PITA but doesn't cost much. I like the turkey baster method. Sorry I can't help more, getting a handle on problems via the internet is hard sometimes. Mike

Hi Mike, I changed the PS fluid over to synthetic a few months ago to get rid of the groan in the morning when it was around 0. It made a world of difference, and no more noise on those cold mornings. I went through all the joints on the truck again last night, drove to FT. Wayne and back (about 110miles) and checked all the u joints they were all cold, the only heat i had were the ears on the 4x4 front that are on the rotor side of the shaft were a little warm from raidiant heat from the rotors. I am thinking now maybe i will drop the pan on the transmission and adjust the bands, i did notice a slight buzz when i am warm and put the truck in reverse. This thing has put me on a mission. If you go to autozone you can get a mity max vacuum pump, for about $25. It works great and beats the tar out of the turkey baister method. I used it for the PS pump fluid change over to synthetic and also for the brake system to change it to synthetic also. Thanks for your help Dirk
