Got a loose hose out of the front diff.

While walking back to my truck today, I noticed something hanging down and touching the pavement by the left side of the front axle. I crawled underneath, and found a loose rubber hose that comes out of the top of the front differential. It may be 1. 5 to 2 feet in length and has a white plastic fitting on the free end of it. Also on the end is a metal clip, which I assume is supposed to clip onto something to keep it out of the way. The end of the hose did not appear to have been dragged on the pavement much, if at all, so it may have fallen down right before I caught it.



I took the free end and sandwiched it between some lines which looked like brake lines and such along the left side frame rail to keep it from dragging the ground.



What I'd like to know is what is this hose for, some sort of overflow hose?



What or where is the free end with the clip supposed to be attached to, to keep it out of the way?



Anyone else encounter this problem?

It is the vent hose for the front axle. It goes up the inside of the fender against the firewall. The higher the better so that youu can go through deeper water.

Don't know specifically where it is to be clipped, but it sounds like the vent hose to the differential. As the differential heats up, air and fluids inside expand, and it needs to breathe. As it cools again, it needs to breathe in. I don't know for sure, but I think they are normally fairly straight up, as opposed to clipped along some frame rail or such, so that they breathe freely. I think the white plastic thing is to keep foreign objects out.

It's clipped to the shock tower on the driver side.
