Drilled Rear Drums

I've recently (after changing my front brake pads and improperly bleeding the system, i might add) picked up a rather nasty rhythmic squeak coming from rear left wheel area. It's not so bad once you get going and let off the go pedal, but when slowing to a stop and starting from a stop, it's really loud and annoying. Any ideas? It sounds metallic, like somethings rubbing. Once the squeak gets faster, it turns into a mid pitched howl at medium speeds, and becomes inaudible at high speeds. Could one of my rear brakes be goofy? Thanks in advance!

Josh

ps: I've also picked up a random clank when I put my truck into drive. Also coming from the rear. Doesn't happen all the time, but every now and then, put 'er in drive, and "CLANK!!" Could this be a bad U-joing on the drive shaft?

CNat tell ya abot the wheel without driving it.

The clank could be the transmission, u-joints, or rear diff.

ANd why did you bleed the brakes after replaceing pads? Did you have to reoplace calipers? Or did you not know about the c-clamp to force the caliper back out?

What kind of front pads did you install, and are you sure the noise is coming from the rear?

After installing Performance Friction pads on my '98 Jeep TJ, the front brakes would "sing:" starting around 15 MPH and up, the brakes would make a constant ringing sound. It drove me nuts trying to figure it out. Turns out you have to "break in" the PF pads, and after doing so the noise stopped for good. :)

Let me know if you want the break-in info and I'll dig it up for you - just have to find the right link. ;)

No, I was dumb and didn't know about the c-clamp at the time. I can replace injectors pumps and other forms of ill stuff on my engine, but, hehe, i'd never replaced brake pads. So i took the calipers off. The sound is defiantly coming from the rear. No doubt about that. Just a rhythmic squeak that depends on the speed of the truck. Oh, and just this morning, when i was slowing to a stop, i felt a sort of grinding and heard something to the sort (like a bad rubbing) and it was also coming from the rear.

noise

The clank, if it is metalic with a ring and then an companion chi chi chi that gets lost in rpms sounds a bit like a ujoint to me. Is there any vibration at speed? Even with not so good hearing, I still recognize a faulty ujoint long before it is unsafe to drive. It has a very distinct signal. Check the joint at the differential. It is usually the first to go.

If the sound is a metalic scrub, then you are grinding away your rear drum/s with the friction material gone from the shoes.

Working on the front would have no influence on the problem. There are other things that will clank and squeek. I think you will be working on something soon.

you know, you're on to something. There is some vibration at speed, especially when I let off the death pedal. The metallica scrubbing sound I thought was something in my brake drums. The clank also occurs sometimes when I let off the pedal at low speeds, usually right when it's shifting. Sound like a u joint?

One of the worst noises I ever heard come from under the truck turned out to be the support bearing in the middle of the driveshaft. It has no grease fitting and mine ended up going at about 200k. However, I can't remember what it sounded like, just that it sounded terrible.

The worst sound I ever heard was when (as a 10 year old boy) I let go of the clutch pedal while dad was trying to get the cotter key back in the yoke on a '51 Plymouth.

That clutch plate pressure drove that cotter key right through the fleshy part of the hand between the thumb and 1st finger.

Needless to say, I got both feet on that clutch pedal real fast! :(
