Oo. My wife is a bit of a gear head when it comes to our CTD. She took it last week to get a new pacbrake installed. Then she compared the weight of our new trailer vs. the old and decided I needed an Edge EZ chip. Yes, she even paid for it! Installed it this afternoon. Now, I've got a couple of questions... Going towing next week west over I-70 including Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass. I don't have an EGT gauge YET! First, is level 4 , edge default, safe without gauges? Second, is it safe to install the elbow without gauges? Don't flame me! I promise to get an EGT gauge before I go towing next. Thanks!

bad idea

Don't try it without gauges. We pull a 12000lb fifth wheel and can hit 1200 easy with no mods! You'll be looking for a new turbo if you do.

Replacing the Turbo is relatively cheap and would be the least of your worries - if you go into the +1250 mode for a great distance - then you can do major engine damage... ... . get the gauge - you've spent way to much to not have it - it will also let you know how uninformed most diesel drivers are without them - as you will see them almost always shut them down without any cooldown... ... once you see how yours reacts - you'll be glad you spent th esmall dollars for the gauge... ...

I thought edge default was level 3. I tow in level 4 and HERE,low altitude, have no problems on level 4. however I am only towing about 7-8000 lbs,and on flat ground mostly.

I was surprised how fast the egts went up with the edge ez. I'm sure that I have pushed it a little hotter then I should have and I didn't realize it until I had the gauges put on. If you do be careful and don't have it wide open for very long at all you should be ok. . in fact I would never floor it if you are going to tow something with out gauges just to be safe... . I don't know what my egt's are below level 4 cause I have never tried. I am going to pull my 5th wheel this weekend and take the edge ez out and I'll let you know what temps I hit. . Mine will still be a little lower then yours because of the exhaust and drop in air filter (don't know how much the filter helps though) I'll let you know what I hit stock. . 5th wheel weighs about 9500lbs or so.

No higher then level 4 would be my opinion and when it startes getting warmer outside maybe drop it down to 3 just to be safe. Get your self some gauges. . you'll be glad that you did :D

If I were to upgrade to a 4" exhaust would that be good enough to run at level 3 w/o gauges or would I still need to install gauges?
