Here I am

Got an engine oil temp gauge? see this...

NV5600 Conversion, would you do it again?

Older, not wiser.

Now if they would just invent something that would make my wife run cooler when I tell her I have to go wash the truck again...

There was a discussion about this a while back, probably the most ridiculous thing on ebay for diesels, this side of that electric fan forced air intake!!!

Define "work". And no, it's not needed.

It would work for heat dissipation. We use things like this all the time at work when you deal with excessive heat ( which our motors do not ) . Functional, yes, needed..... no.

I think it might dissipate a little heat off the filter shell right were its attached but don't see it cooling the motor oil any.

Kinda like wizzin' on a forest fire. Yeah, you're doing something, you might feel better doing it, but it's really quite pointless.

Our engines have a pretty efficient oil cooler built into the block in the area behind the oil filter. It uses engine coolant to take the heat out of the oil. And according to my oil temp gauge, the engine oil is always within 5 degrees of the water temp. So apparently it does a pretty good job.

I've seen some posts of guys with oil temp gauges and having readings over 235F. If the thing could actually carry some heat then for those who tow in hot weather I can see a benefit. But a heat sink that small would maybe drop the temp what, 1 degree?? LOL

At least Cool Collar (or something like that) makes one that covers the entire filter, I cant see that little ring doing too much!

That one wouldn't do that much. Not much surface contact. There are others that cover most of the filter. That would work better. If you think about it, it isn't a much different idea than adding a stock size transmission pan w/ fins on the bottom. For a little more area for the air to cool it. A lot of engine oil pans have fins on them too, on the bottom. Or, as in an air cooled engine. Every little bit helps.

Having said that, would I get one? No. I don't work my truck hard enough to need something like that. Rarely see my coolant temp move up to the 190* line, since I have 180* t-stat.

You'd need instrumentation that exceeded the value of your truck to determine the heat dissipation value of this little band around a small portion of the oil filter. I would not classify that as "Functional" as it relates to being of any benefit to the longevity or performance of this engine.

oooh oooh gotta get one! if ebay says it works its gotta help, maybe as much as my forced air intake i got off them :-laf boy the pair of those working togather would be unstoppable  . i wonder how he thinks that people will belive that it has as much cooling capicity as a front mount cooler??? oh well i guess i will just have to send out the cc number LOL and find out. boy i gotta find sompthing a little more productive to fill my day.

So, what part of my post did you NOT understand?

Functional to the point that it would to some small degree, dissipate the heat from the filter area and maybe even some of the oil. Small percentage, yes. Worth your while or effort to buy one for some type of added value to your truck... . no.

Maybe you could put like 50 or so around your radiator hose to help cool your coolant too... ... :-laf

Like Bmoeller said about the fins on the transmission pans, it helps keep things cooler. I know my first genner had fins and my second truck didn't. So, they weren't put on all trucks. Why I dont know.

Dont they even put fins on those mag covers for the differentials... . hmmmmm, probably to help keep things cooler... . shall I keep going?

The part where you called it functional. It would be "functional" if it did what the maker claimed it would do. Somebody's finger on the filter will lower the temperature of the filter at that point, albeit briefly, but I wouldn't call that "functional" in regard to heat transfer. This device wouldn't do much more than that.

But it would be functional in transferring $20 from my finances to the seller's.

;)
