Hi ya'll this is my first post. I've got a 2001. 5 with the HY and an EZ and K&N drop in with stock exhaust. I'm not looking to make a monster but I would like to find a low mileage HX that someone has upgraded from that will give me a little lower EGTs while towing. About the heaviest thing I tow right now is a PT Cruiser but I'd like the peace of mind in not having to worry about EGTs on every grade. Also would going to a straight pipe (keeping the resonator of course) net me any EGT reduction? or would it just give me better sound? My boost doesn't get above 19+/-, is this something that the EZ should have increased or would getting it reprogrammed do that? I bought it used off Ebay and it came with the instructions. I couldn't find anything in it regarding an increase in boost pressure. Everyone here seems to have a different opinion about lowering EGTs. I love the throttle response of the EZ and would like to just get my temps down some, is the turbo change the way to go? Yes I'd love to have a new hybrid but I'm thinking of what would do the best job for me and be the most economical.

The ez will allow for fueling above the 19psi however the stock wastegate will continue to open at that level. You need to mechanically hold the wastegate closed since it is a hardline HY. You can use a turnbuckle. I did on my hy for about 130k with no problems. If you search on here you will be able to find a picture of it and see exactly what I am talking about. You can get one at the local hardware store or there are a couple places like Piers that sell them. You probably will notice an egt reduction on those longer grades. It may or may not be enough but it will certainly be better than what you have at the moment and will only cost about 5. 00.

I had an ez and 275 injectors and I live at 6k elevation and routinely went over 9k with an HY turnbuckled and it usually worked fine (30-31psi). Even going over 11k passes pulling a light trailer (5k) it was usually ok. I finally found a Piers worked over hx35 for a reasonable price and all is very good now.

Tied into my other post about adding a Smarty and 1. 6's (or keep my EZ and do the 1. 6 sticks) - what are the HP ratings for the 275 injectors? Trying to see if they are comparable to what I'm considering... ... ... ... ... . and I have considered an HX off a manual truck. But think I'll try the turnbuckle idea unless I get more comments off my post... ... ... ...

I just saw a HX35 in the classified's for $500! I don't know if that's a good deal, but it's like #147 under Accessories! Just thought I'd let you know! :)

FT:

The 275's are certainly rated less than the 1. 6's. I think they are like 40hp or so. Arent the 1. 6's more like 90. However the 1. 6's are $700. 00 plus a core charge vs the 275's which were 300. 00 and no core. With my ez and 275s I dynoed right at 300hp. With just my ez I was at 257hp. It was different dynos, different days and different operators fwiw. Not sure the hy will be able to handle an ez and 1. 6's at least here at altitude. The HY will probably be able to do it but it will certainly be out of its efficiency range which if I recall is up to approx 28psi and I could hit 31psi. That and the restrictive 9cm housing. Depends on how often you are above that. I know on mine normal driving I was probably only above that about 1% of the time unless I was towing in the mountains then there were times I had to back off a bit going up the long grades. However I lived with it for quite some time, like 75k miles. After I installed the Catcher ECM it just wasnt enough to much barking and surging for me. Then I ran across a great deal on a Piersified hx35 and it has been great. Have not had to back off yet.

thanks for all of the replies I have a line on a HX35 now. how about the muffler removal on a stock exhaust, will that also lower EGTs? or is it more of a sound thing? I know that a 4" system is the surest way to lower them but I'm trying to stay on a little bit of a budget here.

twiisted71,

Look at Genos for their M. E. K kit. It eliminates the muffler and allows you to keep the baffle, it's a little louder than stock and definitely frees up the flow. I got one under my truck and have been happy with it.
