Studs in place of head bolts?

when does 5.0 liters become MAMOUTH???????

Well, we picked up a new turbodiesel addition to our family today... a 1984 Volvo 740 GLE with the D24T engine (I think). Picked it up from a friend of my father-in-law. He has maintained it very well, has all the records as far as I can tell. Car has ~127K on the odo.

Anyway, does anyone know of anyplace like the TDR for these vehicles? I checked a few sites out, but am rather unimpressed with what I saw. The Texas Volvo Club may hold some promise, as does brickboard.com, but swedishbricks.com and swedishclassics.com didn't have much to read about them.

Also, anyone on here know anything about these critters?

Is that the I-6 version or the I-4 version?

I've seen one I-6 NA diesel powered old Volvo (240?) - man... . was that a cool little engine. Slow didn't even begin to describe that car... .

Its' the 2. 4 liter I-6 version. Turbo but no intercooler. It is a cool little engine, but this car isn't slow... it aspires to go fast enough to be considered "slow. "

I want to BOMB it of course, but I don't know how far I can push things, or even where to start. Does anyone know anything about the injection pumps on these bricks? How much of an increase in output the auto transmission can handle?

You're right PA, this little car feels like it needs help getting out of its own way. I will say though, that it's as fast as my truck was in stock trim. Well, almost anyway.

The stock trans is a ZF (i'm pretty sure) In the 2 years I worked in a Honda/Volvo dealer I NEVER saw the Volvo guys do anything other than maintenance to the transmission, NO FAILURES!

Put boost/EGT gauges and crank it up until you see a maximum of 1200° pre-turbo... . you could probably hold it at that temp for it's whole life and it'll be fine. Or I could be wrong and it'll be a big junk pile after doing that.....

If it were my car... . I'd 'tune' it to the 1200° spec and be happy with it.

The fact that it's non-intercooled only means that you'll have to run less boost/fuel and it will take less time to get to 1200°.

I believe it runs a rotary pump... . so cranking it up will require turning a few screws and maybe playing with the aneroid a bit.

Put water/methanol injection on that thing... . you'll clean your engine and make more power/have lower EGT's at the same time! :D

Matt

The engine is a 6-cylinder version of the 4-cylinder VW Rabbit diesel of that era. Volvo bought 'em from VW. (I had an 83 245 Turbo and a 93 850 GLT. ) With some piping work you could probably retrofit an intercooler from the 740-series Turbo gassers if you got that serious about bombing.

(Edit - I overlooked that yours was a 740, not a 240 diesel. )

I'm pretty sure this motor has aluminum head so keep it mind maintaining proper coolant level is quite critical as well as not overheating it. Also you could run into head gasket issues if you crank it up too much. I have no idea what the compression ratio is, that will play into how much you crank it. On that subject, you could probably tweak the wastegate a bit to raise boost.
