I am looking into purchasing a "convert-a-ball" or "adapt-a-ball" setup, where one shank is fitted with one of 3 balls, and the ball is pinned in place through the shank, which is bolted to the receiver drawbar. Is anyone using this setup, and if so, how well do you like it?

This setup will be used on both trucks, but is not the primary setup. I need to have a 7" drop to pull two different 7000 lb trailers, and one takes 2" ball whereas the other takes 2 5/16" ball. I am trying to keep the number of hitches I have in the cab to a minimum (I already have 4). Thanks!

I have a Reese one I purchased recently at Home Depot, it was about $30, it works very well it has a spot on the top that you turn with a coin, it then pops up releasing the ball which is held in place by 3 balls that push out to the sides locking the actual tow ball in place. One other nice thing is is spins freely so there is no friction when you turn. This is the reese part number, 63803, if you do a search on Reese and that PN you can see it.

I have had the pinned ones before they never last long the pin gets a little bent or a bur on it and it then will not come out.

I have a similar setup made by Master. I haven't had any problems with it at all. I think I bought it at Bass Pro Shops.

i've been wanting a set of the convert a ball type balls for my truck but i can't find a place that will sell a 2nd post to use on the fixed mount on the back of my truck so i can have one on the receiver too and just use the needed size ball, without buying two kits

WDixon: The posts (shanks) are available online thru convert-a-ball or etrailer.com and others.

Scotty: I've had a convert-a-ball for 3+ years and use it several times a month to tow trailers from 500# to 7000#. No problems. Works as advertised and easy to swap balls. I guess mine is a older model and is rated for only 8000#. Newer ones are 10,000#.
