Stock Turbo?

I can't believe how much better ny truck runs after porting the head & matching the outlet on the head to turbo & the NEW ATS manifold to the turbo, the head needed almost 1/4" opened up on the outlet to match the gaskets.

The boost guage flies up to 40 (limit of guage)right when I punch the go pedal & egt's are alot less

I found a peice of slag in # 2 intake port also that could block the flow also.

It must of took 10-12hrs of grinding but it sure paid off.

I'm sure glad my headgasket blew a couple of weeks ago so this had to be done as I've read that it helps.

Well I'm off to try it out today @ a pull.

sewman,

What's the difference between the ATS manifold and stock? Didn't know they made an aftermarket replacement manifold. Is that boost pressure with everything else stock? Mine only runs 18 psi max with 1100 degress max pre turbo.

Paul,

The ATS manifold is for the exhaust,it's a 3-piece manifold that allows for expanding & contracting. This engine isn't stock look at my sig. I don't have a wastegate either which regulates the boost.

sewman,

Good news. I'm happy to hear it made such a big difference. Now I'm getting excited about getting mine all back together.

There was some miscommunication with the machine shop doing my head so it looks like it will take another week.

Oh well, small price to pay I guess. I wanted to do it myself, but I'm getting it flow balanced and also a 3-angle valve job.

Which gasket did you go with? I'm planning on using the + . 02 to get my compression down from 17. 5 to 16. 3 or so.

It is my understanding that porting a head will reduce peak boost by a couple of psi because of the decreased flow restriction. Did you notice this? Maybe your 40 psi gauge can't show your peak boost.

Every modification I've done since about 300 hp has been a minor change. It's a little disappointing to be honest. Swapping out the camplate and installing injectors each made a HUGE difference. Every little tweak since then has been barely noticeable. I'm hoping the head job will be a MAJOR change that brings back that driving excitement that seems to get lost over time.

Chris,

I'll bet your truck will really haul a$$ when you get done. I put the + . 010 gasket on mine. Before the gasket blew I was only getting 34lbs boost & pure black smoke, maybe I had a leak somewhere & fixed it now. When I floor the black turns to gray.

I power shifted into 3rd & floored it & went all over the road,

Don't forget to have your exhaust ports & turbo housing matched

to your gaskets I had to do alot of grinding on both.

Having less overall boost after porting the head is the least of my worries... . afterall, with twin-turbos I won't have problems making boost. :D

I've been good so far... . the temptation to take off the AFC and crank the stock plate forward is immense. My transmission likes the torque and HP I'm making right now... ...

Chris, would like to talk to you some day.

Wish I had taken more time with you at the rally.

It was great talking to Cord when he brought that clutch down to me, he had a lot of good things to say about you.

sewman: Now that you have the head ported and your EGT's are down it sounds like its time for MORE FUEL.

Congrats dude

MDW, I guess all I have left to do is put on a 96 & up Pump & then #10 plate, Look @ my sig & I have the 191 del valves so I'm pumping all the fuel I can.
