Ordered and rec'd the Mag-Hytec transmission cover from www.woodlawnrv.com (if i've got the address wrong, it's in a different post from about 3 weeks ago) was 169+12(shppg) #ad

Got adventurous last PM and installed my new MagHytec transmission cover. Went on with only 2 hitches---
1. Late-year 12-valve '98's still used the same internal transmission filter as model year '97, so had to go back to parts place for exchange. (took about an hour, counting jumpstarting the *gag* Olds Silhouette)
2. my temp sender, in the output line, was angled just exactly wrong for pan clearance. Needed to be rotated about 45*, so I hope it doesn't leak, now.
Other than the simple messiness of that undrainable stock pan, that was the only difficulty.
Went on easy enough once those details were dealt with, and looks good under there. (only clean item under the truck #ad
)

Observation/Question:
there looked like a lot (to me) of shavings in the old pan--it's been on for about 25-30K, and that may be a normal amount for that amount of time, but it looked like a lot to me. (5-7 grams, estimated, mostly stuck to magnet, but a little looked like aluminum and just a couple of flakes that looked more like bronze/brass) I'll bring it to my guru to ask his evaluation, but what's your first impression?

Howdy, everybody! the temp sensor (in output line/ had to be rotated a little) didn't leak, or even seem to be seeping #ad

next "project" will be wiring more temp sensors all over the place, (rear axle, engine oil, and the pan sensor that I stuck into the trans pan) If I can't find a 4-click knob, and simply feed all the inputs into one guage, I might get a 2nd guage and wire 2+2 thru a small DPDT switch that I got from Radio Shack.

ftb87-- the diff cover was done about 2 months ago, and it was full price direct from Mag-Hytec's place... all parts included, and, I suspect, dern well worth it.

Last night, the new "goodie" was the transmission pan. I don't know what kind of a deal the guy in NewJersey got, in order to make them available for $169 (or if he's got any left), but yes, they're NORMALLY $200+ (and, I suspect, still well worth it)
I wanted one more to serve the function of a case stiffener for the transmission housing, the cooling/volume advantages were secondary to me, to be quite honest. I suspect some of the non-ferrous wear particles in the bottom of the old pan may have been flex results, more than normal wear. The reason I suspect this is that the first trans filter change, there was almost nothing in the pan, and I was at "stock" power. I'm a bit "tweeked" now (past 700lbft) and now there's "stuff" in there. the ferrous fuzz on the magnet reminded me of a ZZTop beard #ad
. . transmission still functions well, so I'll see at next filter change whether that continues or not.

Haven't consulted my "therapist" yet, to let him see (better judgement, since he sees more of them) if it looks "excessive" or "normal"... .
Fresh fluid seemed to help the initial hookup, though... . from "P" or "N", both reverse and 1st(in drive) seem a little more sure.
