We have seen a few trucks belonging to customers with faulty lift pumps exhibit a loss of power while towing trailers. But we've also seen quite a few that didn't show any symptoms, no obvious loss of power.

You say your 98. 5 still drives fine even though it has set a code. I say just keep driving it. I have seen codes set a couple of times on other trucks I've worked on, but continue running just fine afterwards.

I don't wory about it too much on my own truck. I have had 3 (stock and aftermarket) pumps die to point that they were worse than 0 pressure... yup, pulling vacuum! Original VP still kicking butt.

Yep, I believe that I am going to keep running her till she dies. I cannot find anywhere that sells these pumps for a reasonable price. If anyone has any suggestions, I am open.

Tom thought of you this morning when I hooked up the old Briar Hooper fuel pressure gauge. Lift pump still working :D Again thanks for a quality product at a very reasonable price.

I have only one additional gauge installed: FUEL PRESSURE. It's a mechanical gauge from Enterprise Engine, reads to 30 psi, and is worth every cent it cost. FP can be used as a fuel economy gauge-- if you drive trying to keep FP up, you will have maximum economy since more fuel demanded= less FP.

The sign of a bad lift pump is not an engine stumble.

The sign of a bad lift pump is a bad injection pump, but by then it's too late...

That's why you need a FP gauge, as there is no other way to know what's going on w/ your lift pump. Install a PERMANENT FP gauge ASAP. Briar Hopper's setup is nice to check/confirm an existing gauge, but you can't see FP fluctuation in action under driving circumstances. Thus, install one permanently. .
