Thought you guys would get a kick out of this. I called the dealer to order all the clutch parts for the G56 manual transmission...

Flywheel... ... 5018079 AC... ... $1356. 60

Clutch Disc... ... 52104725 AA... ... $333. 90

Throwout Brg... ... 52087514... ... $123. 48

Pressure Plate... ... N/A... ... Not available

Grand total of $1813. 98 and that is without the pressure plate. :--)

I better come up with something quick!!!!

Peter

That blows! Peter I swear Dodge reads these forums and spends all this $$$ re-engineering the Ram to not improve something, but make it more difficult to bomb

So get off the computer and start making some parts! :-laf Just kidding thanks for the info!

Peter,

Do you know if any of the parts are simalar to the ones used in the NV? Such as input shaft size? flywheel diameter? I bet they will be very simalar but you never know.

Think about what you just said... DC making something similar so that it would be easy to swap out. We all know DC is noooooooooooo where near that smart...

A "dual mass flywheel" is a two piece spring loaded flywheel designed to absorb the torsional vibration created by the diesel. It actually is very good for the transmission and drive train components. It is there to take up the stress and spikes that the diesel creates. The problem lies with its ability to handle any increase in torque... it will not!!

Valeo, another clutch and drivetrain manufacture actually came up with this designed flywheel in 1987 with the 6. 9 and 7. 3 ford diesels. It really was not a bad thing except for the expense to replace it when came time. The fords never really exhibited much transmission problems much do to the flywheel. If they did incur problems it was mainly do to injector problems or over loading (GVW). Luk made a solid flywheel conversion for the fords using a spitting image clutch that the dodge diesels already have. Luk has the OE on the dodge diesels. Here is the kicker... Luk is now the OE for dodge, ford and chevy duramax diesels. So, what did they do? They made their own dual mass flywheel for all three trucks. It is falling apart in the fords so they had to hurry up and make a solid flywheel but the clutch disc they designed is getting ripped apart. The dual mass flywheel they designed for the duramax is not lasting 30,000 miles. I talked to a gentleman today that was on his 4th one in 40 thousand miles. On top of all this... the pressure plates in every one of these trucks as well as the new dodge is self adjusting. This stops the after market from being able to modify it and make it capable of more clamp force. Little do they know, we figured out a way to do it. Because I know they read these forms I cannot disclose what we do. Now we have to just get the configurations and make a solid flywheel replacement. That is, unless they beat us to it. Hint Hint. LOL

IN other words, the dual-mass flywheel is meant to perform the very same shock-absorbing function that USED to be accomplished by the springs inside a clutch disc?

Is the clutch disc in that setup now mounted soilid to the hub, or does it still have springs too?

I have seen several problems in 1994-1997 era Powerstrokes with Dual Mass Flywheels turning themselves into a major driveline vibration which causes the cast aluminum transmission case to actually break, sometimes into two large pieces. The first I saw of Dual Mass Flywheels were in old Mercedes Diesel cars, which were very successful, but didn't have a heaping load of torque to deal with either.

Sheesh!

To have everything on mine installed on the 04. 5, not including a flywheel I was under that (including labor). Set away a dime for every mile you drive and you might be alright!

Good news is most high-hp guys are putting in Southbend clutches anyway, So this will be just one more thing to add while the truck is apart, no?

(I would think)

$4500. 00 to replace the dual mass flywheel in my GM 6. 5TD last month. This included the starter, clutch, pressure plate and transmission input shaft that were all destroyed when the dual mass flywheel committed suicide.

Safe to say, I'm not a DM flywheel fan.

Methinks Peter will make out well on the flywheel replacement program!

Lately almost all engines over here come with dual mass fly wheels. Even the gasser crowds. They do not hold up for long with stock engines, let's only say Bombed... :{ :-{}

Only one word: CRAP!

I WAS tempted to get my self a new Mega Cab, better NOT!

Let's see how much longer my VP powered truck will last.

Marco

i have a little experiance with the ford flywheels on our 97 the bearings went s. in the flywheel and the out of balanced flywheel snaped the trans housing into too pieces it took a new trans . housing, clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing and alot of labor. and there was no overloading just a 120,000 mi. won't own another one don't care who makes it!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Tommygun ... what is the order code for a "Transmission Delete"?

Can we get everything EXCEPT the transmission ... then we can just install our own manual transmission?

It seems like everytime I read about the new "improvements" to the Dodge trucks, they become less appealing to a point of being not even being a consideration. Not saying my next truck will be a Ford or GM ... but it does seem that we will need to move to the medium duty trucks to retain the quality of the past light duty trucks.

Why do the Germans believe in "if it ain't broke ... brake it!" philosiphy?

I will be keeping the old 12V for some time (I have been threaten to be shot if I were to sell it to anyone else but my neighbors 13 yr. old when he is ready to drive :-laf ). As I have said before ... I AM IN DESPERATE NEED OF A 5500 4X4 and hope that it will be AT LEAST A 22,500 lb GVW.

I have been to two International dealerships in the last two weeks looking at what they have in a Int. 4300 sub-gvw with a DT466. They are VERY nice with the 7-speed Eaton ... but no 4X4 (in a reasonable price range). I have also been considering a F550, but don't want to go there if I can avoid it.

Please Tommygun give us 4500/5500 wishers HOPE ... Amen.
