Diesel Marathon Record

D70 Ring and Pinion.

I was talking to a Hess tanker driver today, he said that they no longer blend K1 with #2 for the cold weather months. It is nothing but ULSD, apparently it is good down to -6 F. But he did say however, they've got about 20 cases of anti-gel back at the rack, "just in case".

As I understand it, the "old" diesel was already good down to nearly zero degrees - so a 6 degree "improvement" doesn't seem like much... I suspect the winter blend, and anti-gell will still be with us for a while... ;) :D

I hope that they are still blending because I am not a big fan of gelling up. I guess that I will be adding antigel. Won't all of the kids be excited when school gets canceled every time it is starting to get cold because the school buses won't start.

We no longer blend #1 kero with #2 diesel because the Kero has sulpher & will put the ULSD out of spec of 15 ppm. For the cold side of the mountain in this state the carriers that deliver over there have been adding another additive ontop of what is being added at the pipeline. I don't know what it is, for I don't deliver on that side of the state. I know one of the drivers told me he puts in 5 gallons of additive for a 10,000 gal. load.

Would minus -6, mean 6 degrees below 32F ? By the way would that be a Dry cold or Wet? I understand there is a slight difference according to some humans.

Interesting - I hadn't considered that! For sure, SOMETHING has to be provided to keep diesel powered vehicles operating down into the minus degrees - ULSD or not!

Check specs

Most terminals have made the conversion to ULSD, BOTH #1 and #2 are 15 PPm or lower. . Check BOLs, ask your terminal operators. I have found that over half of the drivers pulling out of our terminal were not aware of this fact! They only check their gallons, destination, and head down the road! :D

So, does this mean that we won't drop 3 or 4 mpg in econ this winter?

No it will drop 6-8 because our trucks will have to run 24/7 so the fuel stays warm enough it won't gel... ... ... ... . :-laf  :(

-6* :-laf In Northern Maine that temp means you put a sweatshirt and a hat on.

Woohoo heat wave!!!!

No amount of "anti gelling" additive will keep my fuel from gelling at -50f and colder. Stanadyne is "anti gelling" and I've seen bottles of it (still capped & sealed from the factroy) frozen SOLID.

I've taken samples of winter #2 (good to -15f) with Stanadyne & another with winter PS mixed in. The PS did slightly better but after about -25f both were gelled.

Hey fellas just have a question here, i went and put some fuel in my truck and as i was pumpin i see that it 15ppm, ive got diesel from there before but its been awhile, so i only put $20 in! Now my question is can i go to my regular station that has 500ppm and fill the rest of the way with that? Can we mix?

No problems

You can mix, you can use either. There is no difference except for the sulfur content. Lubricity is added to both, freeze and pour points are the same, do not sweat it. . We have been in ULSD for the last nine months, no complaints.
