Went to Schieds Event in Sept, 500 miles one way. Got 17. 5 with the signature below. Running 70/75 most of the way, with stock size tires and 4. 10 gears. At 75mph she was winding pretty tight. Kinda shocked me I was expecting in the 14/15 range. Fred

Dangit

19. 6 ;)

Now I'm running box off until it warms up, then 3x3 unless of course somebody wants to race--but then I can stomp most of them on 3x3. :D

I'm thinking the big turbo is going to put me in the the 20's solid. :p

FTR 3x5 and DD3's dynoed 388/850.

Powerwagon440 and others with 1999s and 98. 5s, remember that there is a TSB that will help you if you haven't had it done. TSB 18-11-99 was done right after I got my truck. I was lucky to see 15 mpg hwy! This TSB is a reflash of the computer, and it immediately bumped the hwy mpg to over 18. Stuck a VA box on it, and for the most part, when I run my 285 tires, I can get 22 easy if I keep the rpms at 2000. This is with 4x4 and a 4:10 diff.

If anyone is getting crappy mpg compared to the rest of us, then there are issues elsewhere.

I get from 19. 3 to 20. 6 most of the time. The Wife has gotten as high as 22. I can't seem to get that high. :-laf That's driving the 70 mile round trip I make daily back and forth to work. Speeds between 50 and 70mph.

I was always skeptical of 1 tons getting 20 mpg+, but I did it! Running from home to Des Moines empty I got 20. 2 mpg. I ran at 65 all the way with no a/c, but I havta admit that will probably the last time I'll drive 65, it just seems to settle in at 70.

I talked to my neighbor (Ray) who has a 2001 ETH 4x2 with 186,000 miles on it. Yes, he was a busy man. Anyway, he says he has cleared 25 mpg empty! FYI-- he broke it in by just running it hard, towing heavy, and using Rotella all the time...

YMMV, and it often does:-laf:

I am not up to speed on all this stuff, but I have this same mileage problem, 15. 7 Mpg, where is this IAT sensor, and what does IAT stand for.

Thanks

Rob, how many miles are on it, and at what speed/rpms are you getting that mpg? One thing I neglected to add that I think others have already mentioned is that as it breaks in, mpg often goes up... . in some cases, significantly. Keep it at 2000 rpms or a little over, and that (at least in my case) is where I get the good mpg. Can't answer the IAT question, never dealt with mine (yet).

44k, running back and forth to work, some city and 70 sometimes 80 on the main roads. Truck has 3. 55 gears all stock. I drive the heck out of it, shift at 3000 all the time. a while back for one tank kept the RPMs below 2500, and still got the same mileage, so I just keep my foot on the floor:D Have seen a slight improvement on long trips, usually run 75-80, and got mid 17 range.

I just figured the HO likes more fuel.

Thanks

Intake Air Temp. It's on the driver side, up high, toward the firewall. It's close to the MAP sensor. If you run an exhaust brake the IAT sensor tends to get fouled by soot. It feeds info to the computer and tries to compensate for hot/cold air charge variances. When they're out of spec they tend to add more fuel, thus killing your MPG.

Do a search for "IAT" --there are photos and specs for testing it. They're around $20 new, so it's easy enough just to replace the old one.

With an OBD2 hookup you can monitor the IAT readings without even having to locate it!

i just put in my edge drag comp last weekend and since then i have went 300 miles on half a tank of fuel! its never done that before! i dont have my transmission done yet so i just leave it on the 1st setting like a EZ. and with my 275 injectors it runs pretty good now! cant wait till eveything is done!

Just a guess Rob, but next time you hit the freeway keep the rpms around 2000-2100 for an extended period and see what your mileage does for you... ... ... . with that amount of miles you should be broken in. Might be leadfootitis :)
