I just installed a Pierrs 3000 rpm govener spring kit. I followed the instructions and removed all of the original springs except the large outer ones. I then installed the new ones from the kit along with the new seats. Here is my question. Is it normal for the rpms to go past 3200 when just free reving the motor. I haven't taken it out yet and driven under a load to see how high it will go. Any info on if this is normal or not would be appreciated.
 
The kit allows the motor to rev higher before defueling. That's it's purpose. It should easily go up to 3400 or 3500, even under load (assuming a 5-speed, or manually working your auto's shifting). I can easily hit 3400 between shifts when getting up to speed fast (which I only do in the most serious of emergencies ;) ).

one word of caution, with this kind of RPM above the 3200 RPMs' you might experience valve float, drop a valve keeper and drop a valve, its recommended to install the 60# valve springs to keep valve float from happening. have fun with your ride.

That's why I back out at 2800-2900RPM, you make call me a chicken but I call myself smart!:D



Oh yeah... . those 60lbs springs will go in when I get BD brake, then I won't have to worry!Oo.
 
I have a 3k kit and regular valve springs. I have never heard of a cummins dropping a valve. Anybody know of this happening to anyone for real?:confused: Do I need to get the 60# springs with my 3k kit?

You only need the heavier valve springs if you consistanly rev past 3200RPM I blieve it is. I only bought the 3K gsk because with 3. 55's and 33" tires having the extra RPM to tow with (and occasionally play:rolleyes: ) would be wonderful. I hardly ever use the 3K now except when just playing around or showing off. I usually shift between 2200 and 2500.
 
I was under the impression that floating valves was only a concern when you got up near 4000 revs. At least, that's what I remember when I ordered my 3K kit after talking to Piers (that was a year ago). That's why the springs are included with his 4K kit but not the 3K. 'Course, if your springs are a little weak...



Good thing I only go above 3K on a rare occassion ;)

I have a question I have my injection pump laying on the table at the house I sure it would be easier to do it their rather then in the truck. my question is do you have to trun the pump over when putting in the springs(it a 4000 gsk)????

Yeah I thought it was in the 3600-3800 range myself. But that does make 3200-3400 a good rule of thumb for people without 60# springs. Better to have a little safety margin.

Yep. Gotta roll the pump over. The governor is a matched set of weights that rotate around a shaft. Gotta get both sides. I'm not aware of an access hole on the other side.



There is a built-in locking tool on the pump at the front of the governor that allows you to lock the pump at it's correct timing. It is simply a tab that engages a slot on part of the governor, I believe. I'm not sure if it has only one slot to engage or if there are multiple (someone with more knowlege please chime in). The point is, this slot, if it is unique, would allow to easily find correct factory timing again once you rolled the pump.



You could also find it with a timing kit (gauge in the #1 barrel), if you have (have access) to one.
