What is the safe max rpm on a stock engine?

How fast can you run these engines continuously with out damage? I found out what the high idle screw does but I don't want to damage the engine by overrevving it.

Thanks in advance

It's a Cummins, you can run them against the governor all day long. That is at stock governor setting. I'd say all day long 2800 rpm, as long as egt's and water temp's stay in check. With my old 91 CTD 727 auto, I drove out to Colorado with my foot on the floor 82mph all the way up against the governor.

I prefer to just remove the governor screw on the pump or back it all the way out. This way you have all that throttle or fueling capability when getting into it. Just because its backed all the way out, doesn't mean you're gonna go down the road wide open at 4500rpm 120mph.

I just backed the screw all the way out and I can go 85 if I want, but I am going to consider 75 my "redline". I still need to get a tach. Thanks for your input.
