I was going to check my governor lever adjustment this afternoon and I have a question. I am reading Piers article (http://www.piersdiesel.com/LeverAdj.htm) regarding how to do this and it mentions the Fuel shutoff solenoid should be in the run (or up) position. My question is what exactly is the fuel shutoff solenoid and where is it? I currently have the TST #6 plate in and was curious if my governor lever is set too low as it does seem to have a slight hesitation when I really step on it.

Thanks,

Dan

You can turn on the key to "run" position. The shutoff solenoid is a cylinder on the left side of the engine above the throttle linkage.

With the key, on you can move the throttle linkage and see the gov lever hit your fuel plate.

From what I remember, I don't think the FSS will move up (to the run/on position) until you turn the key to the start position. With the key in the on position (without moving to the start position) you will have to manually move the selonoid to the run position.

Cooker,

I hate to disagree with you but the engine runs with the key in the on postion,so the FSS would have to be up with the key on

engine running or not.

I am not sure if this solenoid operates the same,

but all the solenoids of this type I am familiar with

have two windings in them. One is a pull in winding

that would be under full battery voltage when key

is turned to the start position. The other is a hold

in winding that holds the plunger in under a lower

voltage when the key is released to the run position.

So you might be able to manually pull it up, and have

it hold on its own. It usually takes more power for

the initial pull in than it does to hold it in.

Cooker,

Is right! Almost

With ignition in run postion the fuel shut off solenoid rod moves upward about 1/4 inch this is your hold coil activated.

When ignition is in start postion the fuel shut off solenoid rod moves all the way up this your pull up coil activated, when it is deactivated the rod stays all the way up because of hold coil (run postition).

You can turn ignition to run postion then manually push rod up with your hand and it will stay.

DLysne, fuel shut off solenoid is easy to find especially in daylight.

The fuel shut off solenoid is cylinder shaped and has a short rod coming out of the bottom, it also has wires going into it.
