I posted this in the 911 forum, but I'm going for maximum exposure here. Are there an equal number of shims under both sides of the stong gov springs? I pulled one out of one side that I didn't pull out of the other. Hope I didn't miss one. Anyhow, I adjusted them the way Piers told me to, kinda by feel. If I leave the other shim in, will it cause a problem?

Thanks guys

Conrad

If it were me, whatever I put in one side, I would put the exact duplicate in the other side.

But, actually, you would probably never notice one shim difference.

Well, it turns out I missed one on the bench when I compared the parts I pulled out. It appears I got an equal amount of junk from both sides. Thanks for the replies. Now I just have to fine tune a little. ;)

That's my understanding..... I just wanted to make sure I got all of them little B@st*rds out. It was getting dark last night, it started raining..... momma's telling me it's time to quit playing with the truck and come eat.....

I guess it's kinda like having parts left over, except in reverse. I talked to Piers this morning, and he said there can be more shims in one side than in the other 'cause the springs are balanced.....

Anyhow, I'm pretty sure I got 'em all out. If the pump grenades, I guess I was wrong.

Last night the roads were wet and I kept spinning the tires, this morning every time I got into the pedal I had to get into the brakes 'cause them little cars ahead were coming up awful quick:--) :--)

3000k spring kit

I installed the gsk two days ago. I can't seem to get the power I had before . I talked to peirs twice and he said the springs were to loose . I am now boarderline two tight. I thought the throtle respose would be better but I cant seem to make boost fast enough at highway speeds in overdrive locked up ,@10 # and no excelleration. Any help would be great!

After my 4K springs were installed my power was waaaay down almost worse than stock and it was the arm that rides the nose of the fuel plate was out of adjustment. After it was raised up to ride where it was supposed to it had more power than it had ever had and dynoed 50 hp more than I expected.

Thanks DEEZUL 1 , thats what I was told by peirs . I was just seeing if it was common to have this problem. Im going to slide my stock plate forward on friday night so i'll take a look.

The stiffer springs don't allow the governor flyweights expand as much at the same RPM. That's why they rev higher. Less defueling. Another thing that happens when the flyweights expand outwards is the rocker travels UP the camplate. So when we install stiffer springs in the governor, the rocker is LOWER on the camplate than it was before the spring install at the same RPM.

Which plate are you running. Deezul1 had the #11 plate. If you are familiar with its profile it has a large flat spot on the bottom of the plate that doesn't allow much fueling on the bottom end. This plate profile is very prone to losing HP after installing stiffer springs. The rocker used to rise high enough to get into the heavy fueling region of the plate, but with the stiffer springs, it never gets that high and thus you never get the heavy fueling like before.

Clear as mud? :)

How do you inturn adjust the rocker arm?

I'll be putting in my springs and #4 plate as soon as they arrive. Whether this is a possiblility with my plate or not, I was just wondering what adjustment was needed for the situation quoted above. How do you get the rocker arm to RAISE up the camplate? Is this done by moving the plate forwards or backwards OR some other way?

Based on my question, you can see where I'm at on the learning curve... please help RAISE me a bit higher also. :)

Thanks

- Bruce

PS Does pushing the plate FORWARD mean towards the front of the engine?

Pushing the plate forward is toward the front of the truck. The follower adjustment is a PITA, you have to remove the cover on the rear of the governor housing and there is a adjustment screw in there. You cant see it. There are some good pics and instructions on Piers web site.

Piers photos - Thanks!

Thanks for the reference to Piers web site. I found the photos and can see where the adjustment needs to made. Good photos.

I bought the plate and springs from Piers and will call him if I can't figure it out. It looks pretty straight forward.

Too bad we can't snap our fingers and get an instant cut-away side view, like the demo housing...

Thanks for the help.

The #4 starts fueling early and works well with a governor spring kit. You most likely won't have to adjust anything.

Moving the plate forward also makes the rocker ride slightly lower on the plate. And vice versa.

Yeah Matt, I thought you'd like that...

I checked the gov springs the way Piers told me to (I think). Put it in 2nd and stood on it - it ran up to 31-3200 RPM and didn't defuel, so I guess they're in right. Unfortunately, the motor lost some punch after I did this. Went home and opened up the AFC to check the cam lever adjustment, and it turned out I blew the wastgate signal line off of the boost fitting. OOPS!!!

Turned out the cam lever was dead on so I buttoned it up, taking great care to tighten the hose clamp on the boost fiting this time;) , and took her for a ride.

To quote one of our more vociferous TDR members, it "runs like a recently violated primate"

Sure do like that #4 plate... ... got the Batmobile smokescreen thing a-workin'!!!

STRICK-9, I have my stock plate in now, and peirs told me to move it forward . 040 and that just about fixed my problem. I just was'nt sure were to place the AFC . Do i move it all the way forward or backward? I did notice a huge inprovement since yesterday.

Glad to hear about more trucks running like recently violated primates... .

It all starts with gauges (at least it should..... ), then you buy a GSK from Piers (a. k. a. "THE Man") . After you have just cleaned up your driver's seat from the puddle you made after you took it for a ride... . you call him in a few days for some more power... ... it's highly addictive.

I recommend the Better Than Ford Clinic... ... it's for all of those out there who have BOMBed the ever living heck out of their trucks and are in risk of hooking up to a loaded 53' trailer just to see if you could do it. Therapy lasts 28 days, and after treatment you'll learn to use the power wisely and avoid the dark side... ...
