GPS.

If it is similar to my E-Trex, yes. It will take a little work. Do a search on laptops and GPS. I have already posted my experiences on this subject.

Sure can, I use mine on just about every trip I go on.

I run Delorme StreetAtlas USA 2003, my Lawrance GPS, and a cable to connect the 2.

We have GArmin GPS Map Source software, and a gateway laptop, with serial connector to download from gps to computer and vice versa, but we cannot seem to see the gps on the computer screen so that we can have larger image to view

From your GPS3 map page press menu twice and go to SETUP. Select SETUP and scroll over to INTERFACE. Make sure it is set to GARMIN format.

If that is ok try changing the COM port number. There should be a test connection page on the Mapsource map page.

Hope this helps.

I think we figured it out. I don't think it will work with the Map Source software. We had another mapping program, and we got it to work with that.

I wish I could figure out how to make it work on something like a small portabe DVD player screen. The laptop gets kind of crowed with the six speed.

Yes you are right. I don't know what I was thinking. Mapsource wont show real time position. It is only for downloading maps to your GPS. TOPO software or something like Streets and Trips will show real time position on a roving map on your laptop.

It is fun trying to shift and check out the screen.

"It is only for downloading maps to your GPS"

Here you go from the help files of MapSource 5. 0. 1 Beta:

"Real Time Tracking and the GPS Tab

Tracks can be created in MapSource by connecting your GARMIN GPS to your computer and using the Real Time Tracking feature on the GPS Tab. Those tracks, and any tracks transferred to MapSource from a GPS will be listed in the Tracks Tab List.

When Real Time Tracking is enabled, MapSource reads information from the GPS, shows the GPS as a red triangle on the Graphic Map, displays the tracking data in the GPS Tab, and records a track. "

MapSource is capable of a lot more than downloading maps. Software upgrades for your Garmin products are available here.

As I type this I am running MapSource 5. 0. 1 Beta with my Garmin GPSmap 76S attached. The MapSource display shows my position as a red triangle on a map. I also have GPS information (lat/lon, speed, altitude, track, time, date, compass rose, & EPE) displayed along with the map.

"Does anybody make a USB interface cable for Garmin etrek?"

Probably not. You can go from the data port on your eTrex with the Garmin PC interface cable (RS232 serial port connector) P/N 010-10206-00 to a Serial-to USB cable to a USB port on a laptop.

I use this one to connect my GPSmap 76S to a laptop USB port.

Garmin Help

I have a Garmin 168 sounder. When i'm not using the GPS on the Boat I would like to Mount it on thr 99 Dodge Diesel RAM. My problem is Wher is the best place so you can see the thing to mount it??I really don't want to take my eyes off the Road for very long and the display (LCD) Needs to be Much Brighter in the Daylight. Also what about a External Antenna????Also are there CD's with programs that would work in the 168 that would cover the roads in America???? Oo. Oo. Oo.

Thanks for the info Thomas. I went to the Garmin site and downloaded the 5. 0 Beta version update. It now does real time tracking and shows your position. As a note you must have this update in order for this option to show up on the Mapsource map page.

The only serial to USB adapter that seems to work decent is made by Keyspan .
