Has anyone came up with a really cool mounting method and location for their GPS unit.
I have the Garmin GPS III+ with the dash mount accessory. I am trying it at this time velcro attached on the steering column. It seems ok there but I can't see the warning lights.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hey, I am jealous. I have the old laptop driven unit (actually 2 of them). Mounting is easy (toss on the dashboard).

The bite of it is watching the display on the passenger seat... #ad

I am trying to find a way to tear up an old laptop and mount it to the dashboard. The problem is getting the display to work when it is more than a couple of inches from the base unit... ...

Jeff:

go to www.gpscity.com and order a Ram Suction mount. It bolts directly to the GPS replacing the plastic dashmount. It has a large suction cup that really sticks to the windshield. I have the ColorMap and am using this system. I have it positioned just below (and behind) the rearview mirror. Even added a 12V supply coming out of roof above mirror so no wires hang down.

I get very good satallite reception here.

JJW-ND: Nice mounts! Didn't even know these were in existance. Thanks for pointing these out.

Huntmastr1: I have the same unit as you. I'm not sure about the suction cup mount previously mentioned. Not sure how well I could see and manipulate the unit while in this mount. But not a bad option at all. I've simply mounted mine to the dash board with the provided velcro strip, just to the right of the steering wheel and just behind the dash board bezel. Works well for me as I can see the maps clearly. This is a bit more challenging at night due to the backlit image reflecting on the windshield. Have to rotate the display forward in the evening to combat this. Someone recently had a photo of their interior (highlighting something else) that clearly shows the mounting location I am suggesting. I'll try and locate it and put the link here for you.

Good luck!!

My GPS is velcro'd to the flat area just to the left of the vent control knob. I can see it sround the steering wheel and it has stayed there for many miles now. It's a Garmin E-Map and fits there nicely.

One thing that I saw in another thread is having a computer in a car to play MP3's http://mp3car.com/usersites/arby/hardware.html - it looks like a neat idea. So my idea woudl be to place a computer under the bench in the quad cab, have the computer play MP3's and then get a flat screen and somehow mount it and then also get a GPS - now that would be pretty cool to have... now to get that truck so I can play with something like that...

Does the Ram-Mount allow for a quick-release of the StreetPilot? I'd rather not tempt the folks downtown, when I have to go into the city, with a big shiny in the window.

I'm currently using the "beanbag" mount from Garmin for my ColorMap, but sometimes when I get a little exuberant on corners, the GPS gets happy, too, and jumps off the dash.

Jon,

You can either just release the suction cup (very easy) and take everything or loosen the securing bolt enough to slip the ball mount on just the GPS unit free from the rest.

Pretty easy in and out either way.
